gratitude at spirit rally by gina montana news writer student senate held a lehigh/lafayette spirit rally in the rauch business center courtyard wednesday night the rally commenced with the lehigh band and cheerleaders jump-starting the crowd with a few old fashioned righting songs and cheers although it was a cold night the hot chocolate and the sounds of the dj kept lehigh supporters enthused about saturday's game and possible victory the location of the rally added more sig nificance to the event the courtyard was the location of the old taylor football stadi um established in 1913 football head coach kevin higgins high lighted the history of the field and rivalry on this field we have conquered lafayette before and we will trample the leopards again on saturday higgins said higgins offered thanks and apprecia tion to president farrington for attending the rally to the student senate for the organization of the event and to the stu dent body for bringing its spirit and sup port to the team higgins specifically thanked the lehigh band and cheerleaders for their continued support throughout the season in honor of their last game against lafayette college higgins asked all gradu ating seniors on the team to introduce them selves to the crowd higgins mentioned that this class is one of few classes to have the experience of defeating lafayette three consecutive years come saturday they will be one of the very few teams to crush the leopards four times in their four years at lehigh higgins said phil stambaugh 00 a team captain showed gratitude to the crowd stambaugh said that he expected a larger turnout for the rally but he was confident more people would come to the game the disappointing factor of the evening was the absence of a much-anticipated bonfire because of legal property and land regulations a fire was not allowed in the courtyard alex clift 00 expressed the necessity of a bonfire for next year's rally the only thing missing tonight 4 barbieri and band keep audience entertained by alexandra goldmacher news writer the air was saturated with lively music when jazz musi cian gato barbieri and his band performed in zoellner arts center saturday night after an introduction by zoellner director of programs and outreach deborah sacarakis barbieri walked on stage sporting a black fedora a pair of dark glasses a white jack et and a scarf looking every inch the jazz cat barbieri decided what pieces he was going to perform as the show progressed he made selections from a list of 18 pieces which included 1812 auld lang syne brazil carnivalito circulos cristiano europa fiesta granada le china llamero y tango last tango in paris latino america mystica seven servants sweet glenda viva emiliano zapata and the woman on the lake barbieri played the saxophone and frank colon impressed the audience with his percussion skills robbie gonzales was on drums while mario rodriguea played the bass and mark soskin played both the key boards and the piano paul welsh was the technical and road manager chris evans a volunteer usher admired the percussion in the band's performance i enjoyed the show especially the percussionist on the house right — the very unusual instruments he uses evans said the percussionist had a table overflowing with a myriad of unusual instruments and danced as he played allentown marketing director christine bauder agreed with evans i really love the percussion guy he's so full of rhythm bauder said i don't know how he can remember all that stuff and i think that barbieri for 65 years old is really terrific as the show progressed the audience could see the musicians working together and improvising they continu ously conferred while playing their instruments when he was not walking around the stage barbieri used hand sig nals to direct his band stew early a lehigh graduate and bethlehem resident enjoyed the performance i think its got all kinds of rhythm and ad-libbing which goes back to the basic themes early said the percus sionist is great they're constantly working on the audio and fine tuning it was obvious that the rest of the audience enjoyed the show as well when barbieri announced that it was time for an intermission the audience moaned when the show resumed several audience members danced in their seats the show concluded with a standing ovation from ecsta tic audience members barbieri let his life experiences flow over and permeate his work his emotions came charging out from his saxo phone tumbled from the piano keys bounced from the drums and percussion instruments it has long been a practice of major artists to incorpo rate a distinctive signature into their works a gestalt-scan reveals the specific color a certain curve a musical phrase and this in turn lets us identify the creator's name barbieri's signature is his hey hey ho ho expostula tion/screech at appropriate points of his performance qfflbr most snakes can go without eating a single
