and 500 students at rutgers university were infected and that number is prob ably higher today unfortunately the spread of the htv virus exists on every college campus she said o'leory said that awareness programs at rutgers include safer sex dormitory parties where condoms and information pam phlets are distributed during christmas safer sex sox con taining safe sex items and informa tion were handed out according to o'leory the number of risky encounters didn't change as a result of these programs . although students were more aware there was no change in their sexual behavior she said those students that perceive themselves as being more vulner able were more likely to change their behavior o'leory said the problem with teenagers is that they feel that aids can thappen to them in the early 1980s she believes that the current formation of democratic governments in eastern europe gives the u.s an opportunity to benefit from an open market with a stronger european trading university by kristen klick editor in chief a lehigh student was assaulted at knife point on the south side of fairchild-martindale library about 9 p.m sunday according to lehigh university police the assailant approached the woman from behind as she walked from the library to the bus stop on packer avenue police said he grabbed her put his hand over her mouth and said don't say anything do you feel this don't move while putting a knife to her right side said police the man then forced her toward the bushes on the west wall of the library the report says at this point another student came from the computing center and saw two people struggling in the bushes police said when the witness walked closer the man threw the woman to the ground and ran down packer avenue toward webster street the report said sgt robert bruneio of the lehigh police was the first to arrive on the scene said chief of lehigh police eugene dax dax said bruneio then called the bethlehem police who helped in the search for the assailant the assailant was not found dax said when police arrived the woman was obviously distraught but physically unharmed dean of students mark erickson stressed the importance that students know about the attack students need to take precautions and be aware that there is a person out there who has attacked a student on campus a letter informing students of the incident and giving a description of the alleged assail ant is being sent to all students by john attacker holds woman at knife-point flees when witness approaches smeaton vice president for student affairs erickson said that students should walk in groups and in well lighted areas going from point a to point b on campus you really need to be careful,"especially since sunday s attack took place in a wide-open area he said dax also said that students should always walk in pairs any time you are alone in dark hours you put yourself at some risk the police are looking fora 25 to 30-year old hispanic male of medium build between 180 and 200 pounds with short dark curly hair he may have a beard or side burns the night of the attack he was wearing a short blue black and white parka coat blue jeans and white high-top sneakers according to the witness this is a police composite the police have asked that if anyone has any information about the assault or the above person that they contact sgt robert brunelo at lehlgh police teenagers at greater risk for aids virus in one experiment the objec tive was to compare sexual behav ior at rutgers with that of another school the results indicated that 44 percent of the student body never use condoms 24percent always do and34percent use them sometimes she said in a current study by o'leory and david celantano of johns hopkins university the intention is to develop and test a single type of intervention in several at-risk populations with a common as sessment procedure o'leory ex plained according to o'leory the test groups are all high-risk groups that attend public std clinics the type of intervention used includes small groups of intense intervention to promote health care there is stan dard counseling required the last experiment led by the university of wisconsin's jeff kelly assesses the relatioaship of intervention with the safe sex practices of gay men it was found that at least among gay men who see themselves as more vulnerable intensive intervention can help she concluded o'leory noted that over a mil lion people in the united states have the htv virus worldwide nearly 10 million have contracted the disease in fact it is predicted that by the year 2000 40 million people will have the virus o leory said vention is not enough she noted o'leory said that human be havior is largely created on beliefs behaviors and outcomes accord ing to o'leory one approach to reaching teenagers is to change their expectations they must be taught those students that perceive themselves as being more vulnerable were more likely to change their behavior ann o'leory how to protect themselves o'leory stated that communi cation is another important aspect people must learn to discuss safe sex with their partners and not be afraid to suggest the use of condoms thirdly she explained that the ability to control impulses must be stressed students are more apt to engage in unsafe sex while under the influence of alcohol therefore in preparation for sex avoidance of alcohol is suggested she said o'leory feels that students should be told that it is better to delay an unsafe act than to be put at risk at
