school newspaper for publication continued malesky in a recent publication by the veterans administration branch office in philadelphia there ap peared an article which will par ticularly interest those veterans who are planning to take advan tage of the readjustment allowance for unemployment better known as the 52-20 club male sky also stated that many veterans training under the g.1 bill did not receive sub sistence checks on time last month because they failed to notify the veterans administration of a change in their address since the post office department cannot deliver a government check to addresses not occupied by vet erans the va is urging all vet erans receiving monthly checks from va to report promptly all address changes in referring to another fea ture of veterans affairs malesky mentioned that a number of vet erans each month run the risk of allowing their national service life insurance to lapse because they fail to take a second look be fore mailing their premium pay ments checks money orders or postal notes should be made payable to the treasurer of the united states if for any reason the veteran does not know his insurance num ber he should make certain his payment is accompanied by his full name address and armed forces serial number the va also announced effec tive aug 2 1948 any national service life insurance except level premium term insurance which lapses after having been in force by the payment or waiver of premiums for at least three months will be automatically extended as term insurance art supplies are furnished and they have complete access to what ever they need she said miss mayham has approximate ly 40 teachers whose teaching ex perience range from the kindergar ten to high school along with in struction in painting the students will also be given instruction in how to make puppets which can later be used for illustrative pur poses miss 1 mayham lectures each day from 1 p.m to 4 p.m in room 201 williams hall instruction periods vary in dif ferent schools some schools may require a one week stay and other two or more she explained frosh handbook now on sale-50c copies of the freshman hand book for the general the job outlook for the next several years shows a steady in crease in engineering positions but in other fields jobs will be relative ly hard to find it was stated in recent publications by both the vet erans administration and the united states department of labor jobs which the veterans administration labels as hard to find include airplane pilot airline hostess newspaper reporter radio an nouncer fbi agent personnel worker and diesel mechanic the outlook on the other hand will be brighter for an endless variety of other occupations ranging from physician teacher and li brarian to stenographer automobile mechanic and foundry worker included are jobs that represent 80 per cent of the nation's em ployment in professional and semi-professional occupations 75 per cent in skilled occupations 40 per cent in clerical occupations 30 per cent in service occupations smaller proportions of employment in other fields and the major types of farming according to statistics revealed by the department of labor state that jobs in engineering — third largest profession in the nation — is one of the fastest growing occupations and may increase by as many 100,000 in the next 10 or 12 years to a total of roughlyy 450,000 engineering school enrollments are now so high however that many of the graduates o fthe next four years may be unable to find en gineering jobs although their first initiated the attached clause to the unemployment compensation bene fits law stated that the rate for un employment is 20 per week less any weekly wages received in ex cess of 3 week of unemployment must occur not later than two years 1 after discharge or two years after july 25 1947 whichever is later no allowance payable for any week commencing after july 25 1949 fifty-two is the taking strain gage readings at the table classroom art course taught by specialist miss mary mayham has re turned this 1 year to conduct a spe cial course in class room art work she will remain at the workshop for two weeks in the first week of study we will cover the basic work neces sary to familiarize the individual with all types of mediums required for class room instruction the students will work with chalk or anything found in the ordinary class room also in the first week special instruction will be given in the use of tools neces sary for such work said miss mayham in a recent lecture the art instructor demonstrated the finer points of wet and dry wash paint ing drawing are made with wax crayons then water colors are ap plied to the drawings giving it the effect of being completely water colored after one week of this work the second will be spent in practical application at this time the students may express them selves on anything they desire doll teaches handicapped city youth as the only teacher of han dicapped children in the bethle hem area mrs joseph doll now attending the curriculum work shop has created for herself a unique life's work what began as a part time job for mrs doll flourished into a full time position a job which inci dentally has been lauded by many school authorities in the city mrs doll taught music at washington jr high school and while there became interested in the teaching of handicapped chil dren she was given four children to work with but as her new oc cupation progresised the number of pupils increased finally on the recommendation of john hedge supt of schools and dr paul kreitz local physican mrs doll devoted all her time to the project in the past five years she has taught more than 100 children many of them suffering from car diac disorders i find no greater satisfaction than when i see a child smile again after a long period of illness somehow i feel that giving these children the opportunity to keep pace with their studies 1 so that they will not lag behind the regu lar school session is a big factor in their recovery they have the feeling of not being left out ex plained mrs doll when asked concerning strange cases she said all cases are dif ferent but there is one which is outstanding a small boy who wais mentally handicapped for some reason he wouln't talk to any one and in my attempts to return the child to normalcy i used every method possible the child was not insane he merely needed the proper training said mrs doll nothing seemed to work con tinued mrs doll but eventually he got used to having me around and talk finally the child would talk to no one except myself and a few members of the family now he speaks freely his vocabulary is increasing although one must lis ten workshop held here this summer it will be distributed in bound form to county su perintendents of schools and executive secretaries of cooperating agen cies consisting of approximately 75 pages the report was published un der the direction of dr robert a bream workshop director with assistance of the committees on school health program emotional stability daily health habits and nutrition
