this spring's average was 074 points better than the fall semes ter 1948 and a 020 point rise over last fall's average up to last fall the scholastic rank high mark was set at 2.258 shattering all previous records the entire university now boasts a 2.280 cumulative average which is higher than all other aver ages since 1923 when the scholastic ranks were first compiled george b curtis registrar station wgpa betty a graduate of wilson college plans to pick up some tips on teaching from fellow students in the shop course some of whom are neen waiting to register 1136 students register for summer term according to figures receiv ed from harry miller assistant to the registrar there are 1136 stu dents attending summer courses this figure includes 387 students in the educational program there are 549 undergraduates registered for the eight week sum mer session 196 less than last sum mer in the graduate school there are 204 students eight more than last summer when there were 196 adult education has in creased nearly 100 per cent last year 99 students registered and this year 183 have registered the number of graduates under graduates and adult education is slightly less this session then last this session has 934 on its roster and the last session had 940 a de crease of six forty students have regis tered for a course ch e 6 and 34 have registered for c e 62 one hundred and twelve students are studying m e 6 the total number of undergrad uates attending all sessions is 751 one of the most popular courses here is a course given by prof hotchkiss professor of economics gallagher arts 49 a 1500 fellowship it may be used to study at any college of the recipient's choice gallagher and the other 29 winners 1 were chosen from candidates from 330 colleges gallagher over 2,000,000 was contribu ted to the progress fund by some 5,000 members of the alumni in an intensive drive which began in the spring of 1947 and ended on june 18 1949 it was revealed to day by paul franz 44 progress fund head the announcement that the progress fund had topped its goal by 700,000 was made by e f johnson trustee of the university and national chairman at the re union business meeting on satur day june 18 more than 5,260 le high friends and alumni have con tributed a total of 2,002,000 which topped the original figure of 1 500,000 set by the board of trust ees said jorinson the progress fund was founded for the sole purpose of strengthening the university in every way possible the objectives of the fund raising drive were laid down by the board of trustees after months of deliberation they decided that what was needed most were a new dormitory a gym and an increased endowment fund by december 1948 president whitaker announced that the goal of 1,500,000 had been reached in the meantime the cost of building materials and labor had risen necessitating an increase in the es timate when the operation began the estimated cost of the dorm was 750,000 the gym 500,000 with 350,000 going into the endowment fund the cost of the dorm was 802 000 or approximately 52,000 more than the estimates the gym annex near completion will cost another 800,000 and 400,000 will go into the endowment fund the progress fund said franz represents the greatest and most successful effort ever put forth in the field of fund raising by the alumni of lehigh financial advice was
