star students that are ready brings lehigh stu dents and broughal children together for tutoring and friendship said curtissa odi assistant director of admis sions at lehigh odi who coordinates spe saturdays this spring each of the 20 broughal students will meet one-on-one with a volun teer student tutor from leh igh and spend an hour work ing on academics after the tutoring and lunch the group participates in activites designed to expose them to different fac ets of college life in the past the group has attended a lacrosse game toured the dor mitories and attended infor mational sessions about finan cial aid vol 98 no 4 tuesday september 18 1990 the brown and white lehigh university lu v.p anticipates greater subsidies for financial aid by juue fishman brown and white news writer in the last five years about 200 to 500 men and women who were eligible for financial aid did not receive it according to michael bolton vice president for development and university relations however the university is planning to pro vide and expand financial aid to more deserv ing students who wish to attend lehigh he said although plans are not firm lehigh is talking about raising a minimum of 100 million over the next two years to expand the amount of financial aid bolton said the university's priorities are shifting from buildings to people and pro grams our board of trustees and key alumni have become very interested in helping us provide financial aid he said lehigh's lack of financial aid is partially due to the fact that the endowment is not high enough to provide for the students who need aid competing schools including lafayette do not have th problem because the amount of endowment available per student is higher than the amount available to lehigh students lehigh's reforms my suspicion is that his legal education has made a difference in this respect gorbachev graduated from moscow university law school in 1955 the first soviet leader trained as a lawyer since lenin barry also stressed however that gorbachev is young enough that his life wasn't tainted with stalin's regime the soviet judicial system will be barry's area of concentration in the study the reforms he will study have been in effect for three years and one of the major items he will look at is efforts that are under way to create an independent lawyers association he said that getting lawyers out from see soviet law page 4 soviet legal reform scrutinized bysuzidemsey brown and white news writer the new soviet union constitution and major legal reforms in that count ry will be the subject of a study to be conducted by 16 scholars and commis sioned by lehigh's center for interna tional studies the study will attempt to gauge what's going on in what seems to be a real revolution in soviet law said donald barry director of the center for international studies as well as principal investigator on the project the 16 experts on soviet law are from north america and western europe they will meet from may 30 to june 1 1991 in a conference entitled in search of the law governed state political and societal reform under gorbachev joining them will be a number of other experts including soviet lawyers after the conference barry will revise their papers and publish them in book form the study which will include aspects of soviet society and legal culture ethnic factors the communist party and the law-governed state was initiated by barry to look as com prehensively as possible at the sov iet's attempt to create a system based on western ideas economic collapse and ethnic divi sions are two major issues that are just tearing the country apart said barry there are over 100 different large ethnic groups who have never gotten along barry said with the emerg ence of freedom of speech they're acting out their differences barry said some even want to secede barry added that these factors have motivated the country's leaders to stabilize and build trust within the plotnicki in the media rela tions department nancy c fulford a pre-med and pre law advisor joe render jr from the development office lucy bavaria from the finan cial aid department henry odi from the office of the provost jacqueline massa from the lacocca institute and one representative from the cial programs for the admis sions office founded the pro gram in the spring of 1989 the major purpose of the activity is to expose the children to something new and exciting said odi the children look at lehigh now as a familar place not as unattainable as they once bel ieved she said odi's goal is to
