campus five of whom were local resi dents eight of the 42 students were apprehended during a random check by a police officer the remaining arrests were made because the stu dents were urinating in public curs ing or being disruptive in other ways he said dax said the number of arrests for vandalism and criminal behavior is down from 23 last year to two this year however he said five students have been arrested for driving under the influence which is more than last year's total at this time although dax did not have the statis tics at hand he said he did not believe more students have been arrested for underage drinking so far this year than last september smeaton said the presence of police officers walking around on the hill means they are going to be seeing a lot more he said officers are not doing anything new but now the focus of activity is on the hill according to dax the 12 officers on foot patrol thursday nights use their own discretion to decide where to go on campus a foot patrol is also on duty on friday and saturday nights dax said they are there to help out and respond to police situations in houses although officers are not supposed to check students experience kime said jill seibert another senior pledging axo added i am glad i will be able to help lay the foundation of the tradi tions at the house and being able to come back as an alumnus to see how the house has grown in joining a sorority as a senior many girls share the view that just being a part of a new sorority and being able to become a founder was temptation enough other upperclassmen such as sophomore robyn suriano who is pledging dz are very excited about the pledge program and being able to be the first sister who will have the oppurrtunity to initiate freshman girls next year some problems still exist for the new sororities such as housing but they will join the other six here at lehigh this fall in formal rush delta zeta held one-on-one inter views while alpha chi omega held group interviews usually with three or four girls at a time sheila mccarthy the delta zeta nat ional adviser at lehigh said as found ing members they will be able to bring their own individualism into the form ing of dz delta zeta and working together to establish a strong chapter within the lehigh greek system ter ry dunsworth the national represen tative for alpha chi omega could not be reached for comment julie kime a senior enrolled in the rush process chose axo over dz but believes both sororities have a lot to offer the women of lehigh by ernie davis brown and white news writer lehigh's two new sororities delta zeta and alpha chi omega are in the begining stages of what seems to be a promising semester for lehigh's soror ity system after a three-day interviewing ses sion conducted by national represent tives from both sororities the groups each selected approximately 85 girls to create a foundation for their new respective colonies in choosing the founding sisters of lehigh's two new colonies each girl was interviewed and then told about the program and what to expect from colonization the brown and white bethlehem pennsylvania lehigh university friday reasona ble person to investigate the situation dax said it is hard to distinguish between a lehigh student and a town person probable cause would be that the person may be from bethlehem smeaton said if an officer is not sure whether the person is a student or a local resident he must ask to see a lehigh id card and not age identifica tion smeaton said officers need to make judgment calls and back off from what uieir legal right allows them in order to maintain the atmosphere of the university smeaton stressed the thing we've got to avoid at all costs is creating a police state atmo sphere here students are not to be stopped just because they are carrying a beer or a plastic cup said dax you don't link what a person has in their hand with their age he said smeaton explained police officers should assume a student who is carry ing alcohol is 21 because only those of legal drinking age can be served at fraternities dax also said police officers will only enter a fraternity with probable
