the administra tion's approval of funds for the project last week the pub as it will be called will be located in neville lounge in the university center the lounge will be completely refurbished this summer it will include a wide screen video projector a sophisticated sound sys tem a disc jockey's booth video moni tors a bar food preparation facilities booths tables and new spot and neon lighting the pub will serve beverages hot and cold foods sandwiches and other pub-type foods from the snackbar and its own facilities televised sporting events music television live comed b&w photo by jim kolberg the beat les-1 964 a group of performers from beatlemania recreated the look and sound of the legendary performers saturday night in grace hall du on disciplinary probation through 88-'89 ians and bands are some highlights of the entertainment the pub will pro vide after visiting pubs at lafayette and muhlenberg colleges and chi-chi's restaurant the pub subcommittee decided on a set-up boyd and the university smeaton said any further incidents or violations during the next year would result in an immediate recom mendation by the university for dis solution of the chapter delta upsilon charged with three violations of the university code of conduct was found guilty of two of the charges offenses against another per son and offenses against lehigh on behalf of the fraternity house president mark mcgowan 89 plead ed not guilty to all charges in an administrative hearing with smeaton thursday afternoon if you look at the events mcgowan said in his opening statement you will upsilon treasurer thomas hydro on friday march 18 regarding further confrontations with sigma chi the fraternity was found not guilty city looks into student rentals sac candidate appeals invalidate elections due to written appeals made by four candidates alleging campaign sabatoge wednesday's student activities coun cil officer elections have been invalidated rather than holding a re-election officers will be selected through an interview process according to coordinator of student activities joann fletcher according to fletcher students appeals cited problems of campaign sabotage such as candidates posters being torn down or postered over she said more than 50 percent of the positions were appealed by candidates four out of the seven available positions have been contested fletcher explained that the interview process will replace elections for candidate selection by posing questions on such points as qualifications and experience prior to wednesday's elections the candidates were interviewed as part of a screening process but the current series of interviews will be more in-depth according to fletcher interviews are being conducted by fletcher greek affairs coordinator karen wolfe who will be taking over fletcher's position next semester and sac president wendy suter 90 fletcher said a re-election is not being held because the campaign problems did not center around difficulties with the actual voting procedure the new officers will be announced tomorrow conflicts between family neighborhoods and student housing areas will help bethlehem to determine whether a special tax or a zoning restriction is needed to curb student expan sion from the college campus under existing city law all rental property owners are already required to pay the gross receipts or a 1 percent mercantile tax on rental homes it has been difficult for the city to enforce the mercantile tax because the city does not know where the rental units are the problem with the mercantile tax regional planning director samuel guttman said is that many people are not aware of it and others just ignore it but even with a 100 percent collection rate smith said the 1 percent tax would not prove a sufficient economic deterrent to cramming as many students as possible into the house guttman said density controls which would be enforced by the code checks exist so a landlord cannot rent lehigh university students for any health and housing code violations-such as having too many people living in the house or too many people using too few bathrooms according to mayor ken smith this is a first attempt to determine the extent of the problems resulting from increasing off campus student housing and how to alleviate those concerns because the city does not have any way of knowing where the rental housing units are smith said he hopes to get a list of all off-campus students from the university and start the investigation this fall when the students return to school this year nearly
