the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 11 friday october 22 1999 all the lehigh news first gelbspan urges action to end global warming by jillian marqu art news writer pulitzer prize winning journalist researcher lectures on severity of ecological crisis ross gelbspan a pulitzer prize winning journalist presented his views on the effects of global warming monday night gelbspan's discussion was based on his personal belief that the environment is linked to several socio-economic factors climate change does not just affect us environmentally but economically politi cally and as a civilization gelbspan said the author of the heat is on a novel written about global warming said the instability of our climate has changed more rapidly than scientists originally forecasted gelbspan warned that a change must occur in the near future we are putting our entire history at risk gelbspan said another point gelbspan discussed was physical effects on the planet as a result of global warming there have been 42 weather events that have cost over 1 billion in damages in the united states alone without factoring in the conditions of the rest of the world international consequences include altered rainfall patterns droughts and severe temperature changes gelbspan said these small changes are resulting in large outcomes including the recent fires in mexico and brazil and floods in china which left 14 billion peo ple homeless future effects that gelbspan said might occur because of global warming include an increase in crop dusting and disease carry ing insects with these frightening scenarios this reporter-turned-researcher proved that the effects of global warming are not in the future but are occurring now not only are we gambling with our future we are gambling with our eyes blind folded gelbspan said we cannot even read the cards we are being dealt gelbspan believes he has found a solu tion to the problem of global warming the basic answer he explained is to begin using climate friendly energy sources his solution for phasing out harsh ener gy sources such as oil and coal is a three step process according to gelbspan the first step to saving our planet is to change the subsidy policies of our heating industries next fossil fuel emission standards must be tightened finally a way to fund the move to solar heating must be found the only downside to this journalist's plan is that the plan will cost the united states billions of dollars annually when the problem of unemployment was raised during the question and answer session gelbspan explained that his method would create new jobs and coal miners could also be retrained to work he said the major factor missing from a solution to the global warming problem is political support without political support any initiative to end global warming will fail according to gelbspan he also said that the public will not be concerned if our political leaders do not pay attention to environmental issues with the advancement in technology and institutional mechanisms gelbspan believes there is an opportunity to change however the public must be worried about their futures and their children's futures gelbspan said according to gelbspan the coal industry is still considered popular in the public and political eye because of campaigns that attack scientists who warn about the future dangers of global warming the coal industry is skeptical of these scientists and has been creating advertise ments that promote global warming one example that gelbspan gave of these campaign themes was the positive out look on global wanning as a way to grow more food and therefore aid in feeding the expanding population gelbspan insists the research scientists have found is true gelbspan said global warming is an issue that concerns all of us combs motivates encourages enthusiasm once again by silvia diaz news writer in an effort to help graduates find exciting jobs unisys sponsored lecturer patrick combs to speak monday at packard auditorium combs a motivational speaker who has drawn a large crowd at lehigh for the past three years put on an entertaining and interactive presentation for the students the moment students entered the auditorium they were led to a raffle table raffle prices were given out in the form of unisys vests and the book major in success writ ten by combs approximately 10 vests and 10 books were given out both as raffle prizes and throughout the presenta tion to students who contributed to the lecture in the background motivational music was played followed by entertainment in the form of juggling and large balloons bouncing around the crowd of students assistant director of career services michelle watson introduced combs by speaking about his personal history combs a graduate of san francisco university with a b.a in speech and communications has been a producer of various television shows such as real tv and hardcopy b w photo by alex strickler motivational speaker patrick combs throws his success ball into the audience tuesday at packard auditorium combs dis cussed what makes graduates
