the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 46 tuesday may 9 2000 all the lehigh news first sundaze provides break before finals by amanda gontarz and kara wetzel news writers beautiful weather and an eclectic line up of bands brought out thousands of music lovers saturday as sundaze took over sayre field the free music festival sponsored by university productions was held from 12 to 6 p.m in addition to the music were activities such as a kappa alpha theta sorority's dunk tank a moonbounce an inflatable climbing tower gladiator joust ing and candy art four bands graced the stage through out the day to entertain the crowd con sisting not only of students but many travelling fans as well the show opened with the lehigh band smokestack lightning the band consists of mered parnes 01 on vocals paul johe 01 on acoustic guitar will little 01 on electric guitar eric koester 02 on bass joe mccabe 00 on keyboards and brian gilman 01 on drums smokestack lightning won the opportunity to play at sundaze through up's lehigh battle of the bands contest we were thrilled to be able to come out here parnes said this is just about the biggest exposure we've had smokestack lightning opened with a cover of johnny b goode and fol lowed with six original songs playing for about 40 minutes vince herman from the headlining band leftover salmon played washboards during their last song if tomorrow were today following smokestack lightning was the new jersey band granian who rocked the crowd for almost an hour their set included songs from their new album scheduled to be released this summer and a cover of billy joel's only the good die young herman also joined granian on stage during one of their songs after their set granian left to prepare for a show they had later that evening in new york around 2 p.m rap pioneers sugar hill gang took the stage their set con sisted of their greatest hits including favorites like apache and rapper's delight which was the band's 20 minute closing song this year is the 21st anniversary of sugar hill gang rapper big bank hank told the audience we want to thank lehigh for showing us love and honor society inducts new members by tammy harris news writer order of omega recognizes outstanding greek members for academics community involvement forty-one of lehigh's highest achiev ing fraternity and sorority members were inducted wednesday night into the nationally recognized greek honor society order of omega this year's selection process for the order of omega was quite competitive requiring applicants to have a minimum 2.88 grade point average participants were judged on academic excellence community involvement and participation in lehigh activities and organizations from this pool of highly qualified stu dents only the top three percent was selected for membership into the order of omega megan miller 00 president of the honor society feels the order of omega's purpose is to refute the general perception of fraternities and sororities one of our goals is to help abolish the negative stereotypes surrounding greek life by recognizing academic achievement of greek students she said we are portraying the greek society and a better life this initiation acknowledges members of our greek community deserving to be recognized the ceremony was held in the university center's asa packer room the inductees gathered in a circle in front of a table covered with 18 candles the first four of the 18 candles rep resented each of the four officers of order of omega the remaining 14 candles stood for the honor society's ideals some of which include loyalty leadership scholarship and brotherhood as part of the ritual each inductee swore to uphold all 14 tenets for which the order of omega stands each of the officers stated his or her expectations of the new members with miller concluding the initiation part of the ceremony you have been chosen as one who holds the greek system in its highest regard and have been chosen to promote its values on campus miller told the inductees new members were presented with their certificates of honor and member ship pins elections were also held for the new officers of the order of omega linda murad 02 was elected presi dent of the society and will be responsi ble for planning and presiding over all executive officials meetings as well as all rituals of the organization the position of vice-president was earned by grant hutchings 01 who will be responsible for providing assis tance to the president and attending all meetings at which she cannot be present john kluza 00 was elected treasur er and will be in charge of handling all of the order of omega's yearly finan cial records next year's secretary will be katie wolf 02 who is in charge of taking the minutes at all meetings the order of omega is more than just an honor society that recognizes the accomplishments of high achieving stu dents it is also an organization that has a philanthropic function this december order of omega hosted world aids day to benefit aids outreach members of the honor society are very
