vol xxvii no 11 sixty-five needed for state special varsity bucks pitt tomorrow price five cents foundations subject of prof larkin student debate flag pole meeting other matters brought up at first appearance of panthers on local field for several years booster committee has arranged snappy program plenty of smokes taylor field 2.30 p.m jim murphy also tom keady on the speech list injured list a number of men are still on cross country to tackle state class of 1919 forms club squad will go to state college with varsity eleven policy of club to assist booster committee a college meeting was held on tuesday noon at the flag-pole m b tate opened the meeting with an appeal to the student body to en able the arcadia to arrange for a perm state special by volun teering in sufficient numbers for the trip he said that the track and soccer teams were going and that only sixty-five more men were needed to make the necessary quota of one hundred and twenty five he requested all who could possibly arrange for the trip to turn in their names to members of the arcadia and stated that the money must necessarily be in by saturday midnight it was announced that two special cheering practices were to be held at 5 p.m on tuesday and friday and all upper classmen were urged to atend mustard and cheese organizes for year this year club to present musical comedy what is looked upon as the hardest battle on the lehigh sched ule this year will be staged on taylor field tomorrow afternoon when the undefeated brown and white eleven will meet glen warn er's famous university of pitts burgh aggregation at 2 30 this is the first time in many years that the annual contest has been played on home territory and the advance sale of tickets indicates that taylor stadium will be taxed to capacity including the tempor ary seats which have been erected probably never in the past ten years has lehigh had the chance to defeat the panther that they have on this occasion coach keady s team this year is recog nized by all the leading sport writ ers of the east to be an exceedingly strong contender for eastern . col legiate honors and the outcome of tomorrow's game will in all prob the first mechanical engineer ing society meeting of the season will be held thursday november 6 at 7 30 p.m in williams hall the principle speaker of the evening will be professor f v larkin the subject of his ad dress will be ' ' foundations ' ' with special reference to the laying of the foundations of the woolworth building in new york it was his good fortune to be connected with that great engineering feat and he is well fitted to discuss it profes sor larkin s address will not be limited to material foundations but will also include some of his ideas in regards to educational foundations as they have developed in his experiences was gary right in refusing an interview to organized labor ? the arcadia irfkeeping up the spirit of lehigh the club will endeavor to deter mine the forces which are detri mental to college spirit and will remedy these defects this policy indicates that the 1919 booster club will undoubtedly benefit all branches of collegiate activity at the initial meeting l l dixon was elected temporary chairman and the following committee on or ganization was clock there is not a man in college who does not know the object of this smoker and there is not going to be a man who is not going to be there the last smoker was a suc cess because of the number of although cross-country is a new spojt at lehigh a number of good men are out and the team should have a successful season the cross-country practice has been go ing on for a month and under the direction of coach kanaly the team is in excellent shape they have been working unusually hard as the course over which the men travel every day is a very difficult stretch being 5 miles of hills and rough ground the squad has numbered about 35 men since the season started . the team is fortunate in having kanaly as coach as he is es pecially qualified in cross-country having had considerable experi ence along this line the trials were held last satur day and the following men finished in the order given 1 carr 2 merkle 3 fancher 4 board man 5 laughton 6 brugman 7 markley these men will compose the team for the meet with perm state they are all fast men there being only a few seconds difference in the times of the first four men coach kanaly was well pleased with the times made saturday and expects the team to be successful at perm state discussion groups with the object of boosting le high athletics in the city news papers the athletic association committee has extended an invita tion to the sporting editors of lead ing daily papers of new york boston and philadelphia to attend the university of pittsiburgh-le high classic on saturday the visitors will be met at the station by registrar walters and taken in automobiles for a trip around the campus and sayre park they will lunch at the commons and witness the game in the afternoon the first regular meeting of the class of 1923 was held in the lec ture room of packer hall last mon day october 27 the following committee was ap pointed for the purpose of framing the constitution of the class w p stewart chairman e j lapp and g c ellis d m wight president of the class of 23 announced that he had received several letters from pre paratory schools requesting games with the lehigh freshman basket ball team and that candidates for this team were requested and also candidates for manager of the team it was decided tnat the officers of the class should select the class seal more freshmen were urged to come out for sports and the entire class was requested to attend col lege meetings and to take part in all college activities y m c a circuit breaker blow-out beck battled his way to the finals in the lehigh tennis tourna ment by defeating mattson in straight sets 6-4 and 7-5 this match was by far the hottest con tested in the tournament this far each game being won only by stren uous effort the racquet ability displayed by both men was ex ceptional it is certain that the man who reaches the finals in the lower leg will have to put up a good brand of tennis to win the tourna ment and the silver cup straub won his way into the fourth round by defeating wentz 6-0 6-2 the winner between estes and straub will play hall in the semi-finals of the lower leg hall defeated davenport in two sets 6-1 6-1 the tennis schedule for next spring is now being made and matches with the following teams will probably be obtained : army navy u of p delaware state perm state and lafayette the first circuit breaker ban quet of the year was held at the bethlehem club wednesday even ing the banquet was attended by twenty-five of the thirty members of the organization and a very enjoyable social evening was spent at a meeting of the devotional committee of the y m c a held on wednesday october 29 pre liminary plans were made for the holding of the religious discussion groups which will be started soon several suitable books were picked from a large number of similar ones to be used in the discussions these will be presented for ap proval and a single one selected at a meeting of representatives of all the living college groups to be held monday november 3 at 4 p.m arrangements are being miade to have a number of professor business men and ministers in the vicinity to speak at these discussion meetings band fund the campaign to raise money for the band is progressing reports from a few groups show that about 175 has been raised this includes a subscription of 50 which is pleg ed from an outside source those at the head of the band fund drive request urgently that as many as possible of those who intend contributing do so by the end of this week the officers of the band held a meeting on wednesday and decid ed on new instruments which are to be purchased among those which they ordered are a bass horn two baritone horns and two alto horns it is expected that the total cost of the new instruments will amount to about 300 no funds are available to take the members of the band to perm state but most of them expect to go at their own expense so as to give the team the fullest support possible the band will play at the pitts burgh and lafayette smokers and at all the games it is expected that the band will be outfitted with uniforms before the lafayette game a movement to secure these has been started among the alumni practice is held in saucon hall on monday and thursday after noons at 4 p.m walter m wood will be the speaker at the regular 6:15 p.m y m c a meeting the game with state rote who seems to have been followed all year by the injury jinx has re turned to the squad and will in all probability play at least part of the game another valuable loss to the
