the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 104 no 29 tuesday february 18 1997 all the lehigh news first by lisa spitz news editor tuition increase lowest in 27 years lehigh's board of trustees has approved a 4.1 percent increase m undergraduate tuition for the 1997-98 school year president peter likins said the tuition increase percentage is the lowest m 27 years but it still exceeds the inflation rate by a per cent or more likins explained that if lehigh were typi cal of all american families it would be expected m normal times that tuition would go up each year at the inflation rate these current times are not normal and family incomes across america are not rising as the inflation rate likins said according to likins m order to keep the tuition increase low the university cut costs salary increases next year barely match inflation which means no real increase at all likins said the raise m salary budgets will be a 2.75 percent increase for faculty and staff allocated to vice presidential units these increases will be based on merit there is a 100,000 faculty pool for pro motions and salary equity and a 37,000 equi ty pool for exempt and non-exempt staff the deans may hold 0.25 percent of the raise pool for faculty leaving 2.5 percent for chairpersons to distribute on a merit basis other vice presidents may withhold a small percentage for them to distribute as well likins said tuition is rising because costs which are borne by tuition are increasing and tuition has to cover that increase the costs of providing personal services such as education are rising faster than infla tion likins said since we have not employed automation m the way that factories and farms have done we have a lower increase m productivity as a consequence major expenditures m next year's budget include 369,000 for zoellner arts center operations 200,000 for sarahris project support and 150,000 for physical plant preservation likins said while undergraduate tuition is the primary source of revenue it is not the only one we are significantly increasing our endowments likins said endowment pro ceeds are now the second-largest source of unrestricted funds for operations ahead of graduate student tuition gifts and overhead on research contracts black history remembered by m umar rahman news writer president of the international black women's congress lafrancis rodgers-rose spoke to lehigh students thursday m maginnes hall about the need for black americans to return to their roots we need to come back to the community of african love and respect rodgers-rose said in honor of black history month rodgers-rose provided blacks with information concerning african history and the problems blacks currently face m the united states according to rodgers-rose the black voice m this country has declined m many respects as the 21st century approaches many african-americans are afraid to say that they are black she said urging blacks to learn of their past rodgers-rose emphasized that history of blacks and africa has been distorted and written from a european perspective we need to learn from our history she said too often we feel history from their ancestors and not to forget their sacrafices workshop analyzes campus dating by lisa a jones assistant news editor the alpha omicron pi soror ity and sigma chi fraternity spon sored a creative dating workshop to commemorate valentine's day the program was presented by susan lantz assistant dean of students and chris zacharda greek affairs coordinator thursday night m the ulrich student center the workshop provided a forum m which students dis cussed the dating scene at lehigh men and women decided what they dislike about behaviors of the opposite gender and made suggestions to remedy shortcom ings small groups devised possi ble creative date scenarios when students were split into groups of men and women they openly discussed their percep tions about social life many women agreed there is no dating scene at lehigh jen conigliaro 99 gave her explanation for the lack of dating there is no dating because there are very few men here she said they're just boys women talked about what is considered to be a date at lehigh girls advise men to be nice more romantic and unafraid of what people think and faithful the men had their own discus sion and then shared their thoughts with the women men said they meet women at parties m class at the library through friends and at work they agreed with the women that there is very little casual dat ing on campus and the dating that occurs is between people who are couples already matt roberts 97 said he is unhappy with the social atmos phere at lehigh you have a few beers go up on the hill and say things you normally
