the brown and white vol 99n0.11 friday october 11 1991 lehigh university czech president to visit lehigh vaclav havel president of czecho slovakia will speak at stabler athletic and convocation center 0ct.26 at 6p.m as a part of an official state visit to the united s tates . his talk is open to the public and free of charge no tickets are required havel will deliver the sixth lecture in the cohen international relations lecture series at lehigh and receive and honorary doctor of humane letters degree havel will discuss education de mocracy and changing relations among na tions havel is the elections take place in june 1992 havel was a leader in the community's civic forum movement that brought down the communist govern ment he was also spokesman for several human rights move ments serving five years in prison for his dissident activities havel was nominated for the nobel peace prize in 1989 charles university in prague and lehigh are sister universities last octo ber president likins zdenek slouka the cohen professor of international relations at lehigh and arthur king professor of economics met with academic leaders to discuss the role of higher education in post professor this semester from israel and an expert on terrorism and its effects on the mass media is teaching a govern ment class titled terrorism and the mass media wiemann who arrived at lehigh uni versity in the beginning of july is an asso ciate professor of communications at haifa university in israel he has been doing research and writing on terrorism for the past six years my study has involved hundreds of terrorist organizations around the world and their media coverage in 12 coun tries wiemann said wiemann was inspired to study ter rorism when he was at the 1972 olympics in munich where israeli athletes were murdered in olympic village in 1985 while teaching in ottawa canada he again witnessed terrorism when armenian terrorists took control of the turkish embassy only a few blocks from his home wiemann studies relationships be tween terrorism and the mass media benefit to be held for hogar crea women's center by tad ehrbar brown and white news writer a musical benefit for bethle hem's drug rehabilitation cen ter will be held by the czechow ski trio on oct 13 at 2 p.m in lamberton hall the hogar crea women's center which is part of an inter national organization is the only drug rehabilitation center in america which is dedicated solely to helping women recover from their addictions the center was created four years ago by patricia elias the academic coordinator for le high's music department lou czechowski a jazz pi ano teacher at lehigh who has performed in europe and can ada volunteered to help the organization i really do think that it's a good cause czechowski said they definitely need the sup port because of their tight budget the trio consists of czechow ski on piano drummer gary rismiller and bassist brian bortz they will be assisted by vocalist nancy reed the concert in eludes jazz pieces by gershwin miles davis and rodgers and hart elias president of bethle hem's hogar crea center and her husband mike have devoted bftw phrto by
