the brown and white vol 107 no 08 tuesday october 5 1999 all the lehigh news first founder's day speaker announced by bevin milavsky news writer john chen chemical engineering profes sor and dean of the p.c rossin college of engineering and applied science was cho sen by president gregory farrington as the founder's day speaker because of his reputa tion as a leader in the lehigh community i invited professor chen to speak because he is one of lehigh's most distin guished professors and intellectual leaders farrington said i thought that he would bring us a message most appropriate to the spirit of founder's day chen was appointed as dean this year but he will not be formally installed in this posi tion until the ceremony the 121st founder's day will be held oct 7 at 4:15 p.m the ceremony will take place in packer memorial church a reception will follow on maginnes lawn chen came to lehigh in 1970 he has been the chairman of the chemical engineering department since 1978 and was named the carl r anderson professor of chemical engineering in 1981 he is known worldwide for his outstand ing scholarship and is highly regarded right here at lehigh for his commitment to stu dents and the university farrington said on lehigh's chemical engineering web page www.lehigh.edu/~inchm/inchm.html chen stressed the importance of striving for excellence in both teaching and research our challenges are really no different than they were in asa packer's time chen said the goal of engineering is to apply knowledge and technology to better the human condition according to the web site chen special izes in multiphase transport phenomena including various subjects in heat transfer multiphase flow energy conversion and envi ronmental technology chen believes professors must remain up-to-date in their subjects by continually involving themselves in research in their particular fields our faculty should be immersed in active scholarship leading innovative advances and lynn windley news writer chucho valdes world-renowned jazz legend performed at zoellner arts center saturday at 8 p.m valdes gave a spirited performance with the help of robert vizcaino on per cussion raul pineda on drums and frank rubio on bass the concert included solos by each member of the group the new york times called valdes a vir tuoso who riffs over borders and embargoes they also said valdes can drive an impatient audience into a frenzy he has the talent to play the complex rhythms of cuba's african musical tradi tions perform the classics with impecca ble technique and solo in any jazz style imaginable because of cuban-u.s relations valdes was kept out of the american market for years by the american embargo of cuba and is only now beginning to receive the recognition he deserves valdes born in 1941 began to play the piano at age 3 his father the well-known pianist band leader and composer bebo valdes taught chucho how to play at this young age he went on to other teachers and orga nized his first jazz trio at the age of 16 by 18 valdes had made two 45 rpm records for rca victor in 1965 he joined elio reve's orchestra in 1967 valdes co-founded and com posed the famed orquesta de musica moderna and in 1969 he mounted his first major large-scale work misa negra he was then known for his unique style of playing the piano he used the piano rhythmically with complex jazz and classical harmonies in 1973 valdes founded irakere which is now a legendary group that transformed popular cuban music during a brief period in 1978 when cuban-u.s relations were improving irakere became the first modern cuban group signed to an american label they won a grammy for their debut album which was presented to them 15 years later by michael green recording academy president valdes sometimes appears with irakere but he is now focusing on his solo career he recently performed acclaimed solo concerts at lincoln center and at the smithsonian institute peter watrous wrote in the new york times mr valdes solos mixing shiny splashed note clusters with tumbaos and terrifying risky runs brought him several standing ovations christine duncan 02 enjoyed valdes performance i couldn't stop moving she said his music was incredible valdes received two standing ovations from his audience at zoellner arts center erik netcher 01 was impressed by the musical skill they displayed i have never seen a piano player's hands move so fast he said the concert tickets cost 28 for adults and 25 for senior citizens and students baker hall was almost full the concert was sponsored by the express-times the guest artists series is supported in part by a grant from the commonwealth of pennsylvania council on the arts and by first union the 1999-2000 presenting sponsor of
