the brown and white t wspapt ounded m 1894 vol 107 no 07 all the lehigh news first friday october 1 1999 new senators elected by lindsay pratt news writer eleven freshmen were elected as repre sentatives to the lehigh student senate in a vote that took place sept 9 and 10 the new student senate representatives are kristen acciaioli jeananne byszewski daniel cohen duron dones sharon klahre yomaris maldonando katharine preate stephanie sterrett alexa swainson anthony tokarchyk and tim weber student senate president tim shotmeyer 00 is enthusiastic about the new members they are a great group of new freshman representatives shotmeyer said elections were open to any freshmen stu dents interested in becoming involved prospective candidates were required to submit a petition with 20 signatures and a written platform shotmeyer commented on the large num ber of candidates this year we had 27 students run for 1 1 spots shotmeyer said candidates advertised around campus and copies of their platforms were available at voting booths at the ulrich student center new representatives were confident that the student senate would accomplish a lot this year s wainson is certain that she will be able to accomplish many things as a representative i am certain this senate is a very pro ductive group of people swainson said i am on the council that has the means and the people to get things done students have already been voicing their concerns to the newly elected repre sentatives klahre said she has heard many com plaints about the current cafeteria schedules i am trying to work for different dining hours klahre said klahre said that another popular com plaint is the narrow scope of teacher avail ability hours a lot of the assigned times are during classes klahre said swainson mentioned that some of the female students in her class are concerned over the safety of the unlit suicide steps b&w photo by melissa snyder lt col peter w reynolds and capt john karson eldridge both of nato discussed damages to kosovo during air strikes the public discussion was held m sinclair auditorium monday today 14 students from global union member organizations and rotc are scheduled to become the first american students to visit nato headquarters m norfolk va in the past foreign students have been allowed to tour the site but this is the first time an american university has been given access theta xi donates time funding to local organization by bevin milavsky news editor boys and girls club of bethlehem benefits from generosity of long-standing committment the emphasis was on community out reach tuesday afternoon when theta xi fra ternity donated 1,500 to the boys and girls club of bethlehem members of theta xi met with gary martell the assistant director of the boys and girls club in the hall of fame room in taylor gym to present a check to the club those in attendance were theta xi president john buchanan 00 treasurer tim starkey 00 and community service representative paul venti 02 the fraternity's alumni adviser al pedrick 43 and greek affairs director susan campbell also attended the dedica tion ceremony seven children from the boys and girls club accompanied martell the money donated to the club is planned to be used for new backboards for the bas ketball hoops in their gymnasium a large portion of the money donated was left over from greek week theta xi's greek week event air band was rained out last semester leaving them with extra funds the remainder of the money was donated from other houses on campus this was not the fraternity's first encounter with the boys and girls club the members of theta xi have been vol unteering their time and effort to this group for the past few years buchanan spoke of the depth of involve ment the house has had with the club we've been tutoring there for four years buchanan said we've also donated a computer and other money m the past starkey expounded on the time the house has given to these children we volunteered there last year on a weekly basis starkey said we mainly helped with reading and math the involvement with the boys and girls club began m 1993 and was started by pedrick the first interaction was when pedrick brought some members of theta xi to the club to take the kids out for pizza the children requested that pedrick bring some more of the brothers to the club on other occasions while other houses have gotten involved with the boys and girls club theta xi has concentrated on the club as their main ser b & w photo by undsey fuchs members
