the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 107 no 38 all the lehigh news first tuesday april 4 2000 theta mocktails focuses on multicultural ties by tracey lomrantz news writer the sisters of kappa alpha theta sorority held their second mocktails of the year march 27 for invited faculty staff and members of the global union the multicultural theme celebrated the diversity of the sisters to accompany the theme international hors d'oevres and coffees were served each theta sister was permitted to invite one professor or faculty member to share in an evening of lively conver sation and food theta's cook pat godlewsky activi ties chair lisa tsai 02 and the other sisters in the house devised a menu for the night that represented more than 10 different countries and cultures includ ing italy mexico greece and several asian cultures though the alcohol-free event has been organized successfully in the past this semester was the first time the sorority decided to integrate a multicul tural theme this year's turnout was greater than usual with between 15 and 20 faculty members in attendance tsai was responsible for a great deal of the evening's events i decided to get involved and have an international theme because this campus really does not do enough events of this nature she said aside from the mocktails and multi cultural cuisine the evening was also a chance for professors and students to interact with one another chemistry professor keith schray enjoyed the evening it's fun to meet students outside of class when we're not torturing them schray said james rebele professor of account ing agreed that the event was an excel lent occasion to get to know his students on a more personal level more faculty should take advantage of this opportunity to interact with some of our best students he said an even more positive response about the evening's theme came from english professor susan cushman photo courtesy of faculty shed positive light on option of living in drug and alcohol free environment by alison meltzer news writer in the past substance free housing has been minimally publicized but this type of living area is now gaining new popularity substance free housing is the best kept secret on campus it's a new program and we're really working on the promotion of it liz piaggesi 02 said i think the more people look into it they realize why not who wants to share a dorm with a roommate or someone coming in drunk all the time piaggesi is a gryphon on dravo's first floor which is also a substance free location living in a substance free environ ment does not restrict these students from partying they agree to not bring the negative effects of partying back to their living environment cigarette smoking is also not accepted in substance free resi dence areas this program has come a long way from its start in warren square's impact house which housed 11 students now substance free housing has expanded to include the fourth floor of brodhead warren square b house a of sayre park village and dravo's first and second floors on the awing substance free living areas will remain in the same buildings for the upcoming year barbara hawkins has been director of residence life since july 1999 one of her responsibilities is to work with substance free housing every year the numbers have increased hawkins said we are up to 106 upper class students for the fall 2000 semester we want the quality of the program to grow better each year it's important to us that the students value their experience molly king 03 is a resident of a sub stance free hall in dravo it's quiet so there's never a problem getting work done king said i'm doing this again next year jennifer harvey 03 is another sub stance free resident who lives in dravo i've had a really good time harvey said there are some really interesting people in the hall and upstairs as well you never have to worry about a mess in the bathroom or on the floor matt miller 01 a gryphon on a substance free hall on dravo's second floor predicts there will be 150 sub stance free students for next semester there are now 17 students miller advises on his floor the reason dravo was picked was because of the outlay of the halls he said these are some of the smaller halls on campus and they're easy to place it is also in the quad area which gives it a lot of social aspects there are singles doubles and triples offered in addition to monthly socials the substance free team holds meetings led by hawkins to discuss future plans and implement changes it is now concen trating on a new name for promotion to freshman substance free housing has a ways to go piaggesi said we're really trying to better promote it and make people understand what we are all about and what's going on promotions include a new substance free brochure to be sent to all freshmen in their residential life packet as well as a table set up at candidates day to intro duce newcomers substance free students are able to enjoy their residence life without the unnecessary and frustrating effects of alcohol abuse piaggesi explained that the reference to impact housing has had a deroga tory effect on this type of housing students immediately believe that sub stance free housing is associated with project impact which is a false assumption miller also wants to open people's minds to the idea of a substance free living environment i hate to see it have a bad connota tion on campus miller said i think it's see mocktails page 10 see
