the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 107 no 31 tuesday february 29 2000 all the lehigh news first by chris litman art exhibit illuminates horrors of holocaust news writer judy chicago's art exhibit entitled holocaust project from darkness into light on display at the zoellner arts center illustrates the atrocities associat ed with the holocaust the artwork is based on a poem by a holocaust survivor heal those broken souls who have no peace and lead us from all darkness into light the exhibit is one of the culminating events m lehigh's year-long educational program called the holocaust project critical reflections on modernity along with chicago's exhibit there are also future events taking place which examine the holocaust m the context of issues surrounding the 20th century such as war and genocide society and technology and racial and gender issues ten public lectures are scheduled throughout the semester with chicago leading one during her tenure as lehigh's artist-in-residence m march there are several undergraduate courses focusing on issues involved with the holocaust taught across the spectrum of departments m the college of arts and sciences from philosophy to women's studies in late may an international confer ence called representing the holocaust practices products projections will be held at lehigh with peter novick of the university of chicago as the main speaker professor laurence silberstein who directs the philip and muriel berman center for jewish studies and is also one of the chief architects of the exhibit and the year-long project spoke of how chicago confronts interrelated subjects she touches on so many different groups and issues he said she exposes issues of technology indifference geno cide gender in bringing the exhibit here we knew that it would touch people m many different ways chicago started work on from darkness into light m 1985 and fin ished m 1993 the exhibit resembles a journey for the viewer and can be approached m many different ways most will probably see it with the aid of an audio tour with earphones and a cassette-player a person can walk through the exhibit while hearing the narration of chicago and her explanation for how and why she crafted the various pieces which took almost a decade to create guided tours are also available from trained docents or an individual may decide to peruse the exhibit on his or her own b&w photo by jason allora judy chicago's art exhibit holocaust project from darkness into light strives to enlighten viewers on the ongoing holocaust m our lives the exhibit will be on display at the zoellner arts center gallery until june 11 sametz wins grammy with his composition by c issabella shields news writer dr steven sametz the lehigh music professor who has recently been named to the oxford university press list of top composers is also a contributing com poser to the grammy award winning cd colors of love the cd a group of choral works sung by the group chanticleer won the award for best small ensemble performance it features eight contemporary love songs including sametz's in time of christopher johnson manager of the oxford university press and editor of the music section of the paper said virtually every critic who has reviewed the album singled out in time of for special praise we are proud to have it on our list along with many other compositions and arrangements by steven sametz and we congratulate steven chanticleer and teldec on their brilliant achievement in time op was originally to be per formed by three lehigh orchestras and five choirs but the version on the cd was reduced to twelve chanticleer voices the song still has the same flavor sametz said but it is m a totally differ ent setting the words for in time of come from an e.e cummings poem certain poems just sing to me off the page sametz said the words flow into certain sound colors for me christopher frisco 02 a music major said that in time op was a very personal piece for his conductor to write it was written m memorium of someone he knew so it's about the process of remembering and mourning and surviving and forgetting he said it obviously has a lot of feeling behind it and it is absolutely stunning sametz keeps his target performing group m mind as he composes his works if i write for the lehigh chorus the piece will be totally different than if i were writing for the princeton singers he said it's hard to write for commis sion it's like writing a term paper for a professor or something there is a due date and everything sametz said he loves to hear his music performed it's like having children you get to lavish a lot of attention on them he said the great part about lehigh is i can compose on thursday and then i am lit erally at the xerox machine on friday preparing for a rehearsal of my work that night the immediacy is terrific it's such a great lab aspect the hard part about it though is sending my music to be per formed by other groups i have to worry that my children don't get molested frisco spoke of the advantages of working direcdy with the composer it's a unique experience singing under the conductor who also wrote the piece frisco said there is no guess work involved so there is a very intimate connection he knows exactly what he wants to be sung because he is express ing a part of himself tiffany giangiulio 02 holds sametz m high esteem you get a lot more accomplished and you sound a lot better when working under him she said he's pretty brilliant and has an amazing ear to hear exactly what he wants heard giangiulio said sametz is able to pin point one person m a group of fifty the choir stands m a certain order so when we blend voices he is able to move
