by al yost the annual lehigh lafayette football classic wound up in a referee hunt and brawl late this afternoon incensed by the apparent injustices committed by the game officials a mob hundreds strong burst from the lehigh stands at the moment the game was over one unidentified lehigh fan caught one of the officials as he tried to escape pulled him around and landed a haymaker that cut the ref down in his tracks police instantly swarmed over the agressor beating him about the head and face with billy-sticks the police were mobbed by the rest of the angry crowd but succeded in holding their man while the referees were rushed from the field the officials incurred the wrath of the big brown follow ers when they called two suc cessive penalties against lehigh for interfering with pass re ceivers yardage gained by the maroon team this way set them up for a touchdown after the penalties had been called the lehigh stands jump ed to their feet shouting at and booing the officials keeping up the din until the close of the game lehigh took the lead in the clash only minutes after the game started gabriel scoring from the one-yard line in the same first quarter dick doyne raced downfield with a pack of lafayette players at his heels to score the second time only one conversion was good giv ing lehigh their 13 points only one other time during the remainder of the game did lehigh threaten to score scrap ping every inch of the way they smashed downfield from the one-yard line the brown attempted to push into pay-dirt in a rush through the center of the line lehigh fumbled tempers flared again when the lehigh team con tended that the touchdown had been made before the ball was fumbled the officials brough the fall out to the 20-yard line first and ten for lafayette and play was resumed final score lehigh 13 lafa yette 23 the maroon team scored three touchdowns two conversions and one field goal when the packers held the leopards from scoring another six-pointer in the final period the maroon kicked an easy field goal crushing the hopes of the big brown for a win or tie ball game f the battle after the game was officially over held the la fayette fans rooted in the stands as the red eyed gang of ref beaters charged across the field from the lehigh stands fight ing broke out in several places as the brown fans hammered away at officials police and lafayette rooters — at every the goalposts succumbed mo ments after lehigh men reach ed them a group of leopards resisted the efforts of the pack er fans to carry away the goal posts as trophies there fol lowed a see-saw tug-of-war over the fence surrounding the field that battle was won by lehigh the victors running across the lafayette campus with some 20 feet of timber we must make sure that a jewish state is established in palestine the rev wendell phillips told the international relations club last wednesday evening the first hour of the speech was broadcast over wgpa-fm the rev mr phillips explain ed that the jews have prior , rights to jerusalem and the sur rounding area he insisted that the british are standing in the way of a zionist state to pre serve vital bases and oil fields in the middle east the rev wendell phillips radio commentator for a new york station is the rector of christ's church rye n y he has served as assistant chap lain of columbia university and as pastor of trinity church new rochelle n y the middle east needs the progress that the jews bring rev phillips told what he term ed an audience of experts and building cities in a desert long since abandoned by the arabs he said the arabs don't want to live in the desert the jews are growing crops but they don't want the jews to live in it either he affirmed he pointed out that the jews have added much more to the literature and civilization of palestine than the arabs he explained that the arabs have allowed palestine and the sur rounding area to degenerate since the time of christ continued on page 3 col 2 snow queen to reign at yuletide shindig librarian dies here 25 years after 25 years of service as lehigh university librarian howard seavoy leach died at 2 a.m wednesday in st luke's hospital at the age of 61 anyone desiring to nominate a girl for snow queen honors -
