the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 37 tuesday march 23 1999 ah the lehigh news first luvme entertains by deanna dutkus news writer the lehigh university very modern ensemble knows how to play with their food and this weekend there was something new on the menu at the zoellner arts center in musical food luvme is comprised of lehigh stu dents faculty and guest musicians the ensemble is dedicated to performing 20th century music luvme is directed by founder and composer paul salerni a professor of music salerni felt it was time that luvme had a concert devoted to food this weekend's performance of musical food was a long time coming salerni said the department is well known for being good eaters and good cooks keeping that idea in mind musical food featured compositions that had food or food merchants as their subjects each composition told an elaborate story as well musical food according to salerni was meant to be light-hearted and entertain ing and to reach back to the audience espe cially families this is a change for luvme because many of its concerts feature abstract music in 1981 luvme presented its debut concert in the past 18 years it has presented or produced more than 60 contemporary music performances the students who participate in luvme not only receive academic credit but also valuable hands-on learning experience luvme gives students the unique opportunity to perform with professional players and to see what is involved with musical productions first hand each year luvme presents four to five events there are approximately two or three concerts which include music by established and up coming 20th century composers these concerts are performed with ensembles that occasionally include profes sional musicians in addition to lehigh stu dents and faculty another event is a residency conducted by a composer/performer of electronic music brought in by the music department this includes a concert as well as a workshop for lehigh's electronic composi tion students the year concludes with a final concert featuring students compositions of elec tronic and acoustic music the martindale center for the study of private enterprise student associates induction took place saturday at the zoellner arts center eleven inductees who were named in february were honored at the ceremony top l to r patricia haley hargreaves former student associate and juniors danielle puceta mereille najm beth ellen antonuk sacha dumont amy di stasio megan miller and j r aronson professor of business and economics and director of the martindale center bottom l to r juniors james nehlsen mered parnes jeff wantman troy danka and david thorn as part of the program the student associates will take a trip executive-in-residence program hosted world-renowned economics expert and current president and senior operating officer of occidental petroleum dale r laurance in a three-day stay ending thursday night laurance highlighted his stay by explain ing the advantages of corporate agility in a consolidating marketplace at his wednesday afternoon speech entitled mega mergers is bigger really better in 1998 the merger wave shattered all pre vious records reaching as far as 1.6 trillion i expect this year's mergers will break last year's record laurance said deals don't always create the value expected technology management ability finan cial strength and agility are the four major categories that decide if a company will make it laurance believes since there is now a large pool of educated managers available and technology advantages have short lifespans laurance believes that the latter two are the most important financial strength is related to size he said bigger companies are better able to finance operations in both good and bad times however he said companies that are bigger are not able to adapt to change as quickly as smaller companies for smaller companies to survive they must be able to find niche markets that larger companies can't compete or will not compete in he said there is overwhelming evidence that shows that small companies can outperform big companies almost every time if agility is the deciding factor laurance said large companies have advantages in mature markets and are more financially secure because they are better able to weath er out bad times
