the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 35 friday march 5 1999 ah the lehigh news first professor analyzes israeli and hebrew cultures by heather gershen news writer israeli professor dr hannan hever ques tioned the distinctions between hebrew and israeli literature during a speech monday entitled national literature and national identity 50 years of israeli literature hever's main objective was to show that hebrew literature and israeli literature are both part of israeli culture and history he demonstrated that all poems or sto ries composed in hebrew contribute to the israeli national identity hever outlined ways in which hebrew lit erature written years ago has been trans formed into the israeli literature of today hever asserted that material that originat ed during each time period reflected the need for the existence of a sovereign state of israel using post-colonial literary theory hever highlighted the dilemmas of israeli national identity as expressed through israeli literature the transformation from hebrew to israeli literature is neither clear cut nor con summated hever said he said the saturation of violence in israeli history provides a perpetually changing environment and prevents litera ture from getting defined as strictly israeli literature in order to illustrate his point hever used the analogy of a map to codify symbols in israeli literature the map is one stable component hever said it functions as an integral part of a israel's national allegory hever said that the israeli military map symbolizes ruptures caused by jewish-palestinian violence that accom panied the creation of the independent state of israel students found the maps and visual aides hever used to be informative infor mation during the speech the lecture was particularly interesting for me because previous literature classes that i have taken have never covered hebrew literature and so i was exposed to a whole new category of stories and poetry amie kutzner 01 said hever is an associate professor of poetics and comparative literature at tel aviv university in israel he is currently serving a term as a visiting professor at columbia university he has also written two books on hebrew poetry and is currently preparing a major project on the history of hebrew literature the project is scheduled to be shown this spring in jerusalem members of the audience also found hever's ideas and theories to be thought pro voking and enjoyed the longevity of his ideas religion studies professor chava weissler ota vice provost and dean of the college of business and economics has announced three new department chairs the newly appointed chairs are professors john stevens management and marketing james greenleaf finance and law and kenneth sinclair accounting vincent munley will continue as chairman of the economics department in the past there have only been two department chairs in the college those in the departments of business and economics however this past summer the cbe in partnership with the ernst and young foun dation participated in a strategic manage ment process first among the strategies discussed was reorganizing the structure of the college to allow for growth and new opportunities during the first week of classes a meet ing of the cbe faculty was held to discuss possible strategies and the idea to appoint four chairs was originated it was clear that there was significant support for moving from the two department structure to four departments ota said ota made a recommendation to the provost and president and in october the board of trustees approved the recommendation this created four departments account ing management and marketing finance and law and economics subsequently there was also the need for three new chairs to head these departments greenleaf has been a faculty member since 1970 he was the former department of busi ness chairman he specializes in corporate finance and investments and was a consul tant to several investment firms he also directed the institute for study of commodities at lehigh sinclair joined the lehigh faculty in 1972 and specialized in managerial and cost accounting he has also received sever al teaching awards during his career stevens has been at lehigh since 1975 he is a specialist in strategic management and organizational analysis he is also associate director of the musser center for entrepreneurship this newly created department is consid ered very important because it deals directly with the teaching and research concerning the skills necessary to create lead and man age a business the cbe hopes the newly reorganized departments will prove beneficial to the col lege the college also hopes the innovative and integrated structure will further collabo ration with other departments and disci plines across campus stevens said the creation of the new departments was looked favorably upon by the administration the new departments were greatly encouraged by president farrington's vision for lehigh stevens said we're all very anxious to transform and improve our research and teaching techniques to help make the vision a reality the new department heads as well as munley are all very eager to further le high's growth through the college of business and economics however this is just one step the cbe has made towards improvement the college is now hoping to move on to other important issues including improving the research culture increasing faculty diversity and putting appropriate assessment mechanisms in place the cbe is constantly working to com municate positive and consistent messages about the cbe and its mission the cbe employs 56 full-time faculty members as well as adjunct professors in two departments ninety eight percent of professors hold terminal degrees twenty one current faculty members in the cbe have won lehigh university teach ing
