brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 12 tuesday october 20 1998 all the lehigh news first founder's day officially installs farrington by lisa a jones contributing editor gregory c farrington outlined his goals for leading the university into the 21st centu ry during his installation as 12th president at the 120th founder's day ceremony oct 8 now is the time to write the next chap ter in lehigh's history farrington said i believe lehigh can emerge as one of the best medium-sized universities in the whole world the ceremony also included the recogni tion of student scholars and the installation of 16 new department chairs and endowed professors farrington emphasized the importance of both groups saying people are the truest measure of the university he told more than 600 students faculty and staff in atten dance his game plan for the future which included assuring that only the finest facul ty are hired and tenured and that they are competitively compensated in addition farrington stressed the importance of the university's development arm and said he will focus on getting department chairs and undergraduate finan cial aid endowed he also officially announced class of 48 alumnus peter c rossin's gift of 25 million to the college now named p.c rossin college of engineering and applied science farrington accented the university's need for fund raising universities do not print money they have to make it to be able to spend it farrington said he said a comprehensive strategic plan needs to be devised to choose where money will be focused and announced that the critical moment fund which he began is growing nicely farrington has already raised 5 million for the fund and plans to continue amassing that amount each year to benefit academic programs part of lehigh's challenge for the next century will be getting its name known worldwide according to farrington we must be less constrained by what we've done and what we've never done he said we must realize our world is much larger than just the lehigh valley farrington reiterated a statement he has often made since he became president when i get up in the morning i don't dream of being at another university he said i dream of the finest lehigh i can imagine you and i must share a non-negotiable , b&w photo by danielle frikker president farrington emphasized his commitment to excellence at founder's day good scholars prepare to collect votes plans for zeta psi's good scholar election are underway to benefit cancer research by mfxissa garofalo news writer zeta psi held a dinner oct 7 to begin planning their ninth annual good scholar election to be held nov 8-23 dan martin 99 good scholar chairper son urged everyone in attendance to close their eyes and think of the last time they made a difference in someone's life although he commended those who vol unteered their time as tutors and those who had kicked the winning goal in a soccer match his main concern was with impacts made on a more vital level has anyone impacted an individual or group so dramatically that it has saved lives martin asked because not many in the room could say that they had martin challenged every one to take their differences they have made in society one step further by impacting someone's life by returning good fortune to someone who has not had the chance to experience the events of life as a healthy person does by taking part in the good scholar election the good scholar election is an annual event sponsored by zeta psi that raises money for cancer research it is set up as a contest between various living groups and organizations on campus each organization involved chooses a representative who must have at least a 3.25 cumulative gpa the representative participates in the election by collecting votes which are equivalent to 1 solicit ed by the representative from parents friends relatives alumni and businesses all of the money collected is donated to the american cancer society to benefit cancer research the representative who collects the most votes or raises the great est amount of money is nominated as the good scholar the election was inspired by dr alvin cohen's successful fight against cancer he was professor of economics and the former faculty adviser of a fraternity who had to take a leave of absence in 1988 when he discovered he had cancer cohen was cured as a result of sue b&w photo by marc maleh dr alvin cohen urges good scholar candidates not to be ashamed to buy the election see day page 8 see scholar page 8 the most credit cards owned by one person was 1,394 source strange but true website http://www.sbt.bhmedia.com k'hu v3 2 lehigh trampled over national depression high definition w am m w towson saturday screening day tests television will add more mtmsk m m w ' nnin 9 55 " 7 - students for disorders channels by year 2006 jjfcbs£s sports 17-24 news 1-8 science 11-13 j volleyball 17 lee denim day 5 science briefs 13
