the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 106 no 11 friday october 9 1998 all the lehigh news first alumnus donates unprecedented 25 million peter c rossin 48 gives gift and name to college of engineering by jennifer everett editor in chief in 1 948 lehigh made its last payment on an investment in peter c rossin yesterday it reaped a 25 million dividend rossin 48 continued lehigh's tradition of impressive alumni support with the dona tion of a 25 million endowment which is ear marked to continue enhancement of the engi neering program his gift is the largest in lehigh's history rossin a native of staten island n.y who now resides in pittsburgh made a name for him self by founding a titanium metals company lehigh has proven itself to be one of the outstanding universities in the united states rossin said i feel a good deal of my person al success is attributed to lehigh i'm anxious to further the growth of the university in honor of rossin's donation which was announced at yesterday's founder's day cele bration the college of engineering will assume the new title of the p.c rossin college of engineering and applied science this is the first of lehigh's four colleges to be named this is the right thing to do said harvey stenger dean of the college of engineering and applied science when you meet pete rossin you realize it's not the money it's real ly that this is the type of person we want our students to have as a role model according to stenger rossin was recently thinking of doing something special for his alma mater and when the idea of making him the namesake of the engineering college arose he was flattered the details of exactly how the payments are going to be structured are still being worked out president gregory c conference explores new media styles by heatherjgnall news writer a group of students and faculty attended a conference that discussed multiple opinions on the future of online journalism oct 1 , at the time life building in new york city the purpose of the conference was to make our pro gram in online journalism more nationally visible jack lule chair of the department of journalism and communication said the conference was also attended by lehigh alumni and professionals with an interest in online journalism the conference was organized by lehigh's administra tion the advancement office and the department of journalism and communication there was an hour and a half panel discussion followed by a question and answer session and then a reception one of the issues that was brought up was whether online journalism is sufficiently different from other forms of journalism the panel also discussed whether journalists should be trained to work in this new medium and what the role of undergraduate journalism programs should be in the digital age panelist merrill brown editor in chief of msnbc on the internet talked about ethical issues involving online journalism he discussed his distaste for people talking about con troversies such as the president clinton scandal as a defin ing moment for the internet visiting professor stresses the value of revision in writing by antonetta stancu news writer dr david bartholomae professor of english at the university of pittsburgh spoke about the importance of improving student's writing abilities monday night in sinclair auditorium bartholomae began his talk with a passage by richard poirier a contemporary american author the passage stressed the importance of viewing writing as one would any other aspect of life writing efforts should be taken just as seriously as those of any other activity in which one would partake bartholomae said bartholomae then drew the audience's attention to two passages written by alexander hombolt hombolt was one of the greatest travelers and trav el writers of the nineteenth century perhaps the great est bartholomae said these passages were examples of the way in which a travel writer should use imagery of the landscape and sur roundings to describe beauty and extravagance bartholomae said that hombolt was able to recreate a new image of the americas according to bartholomae this idea of investing one's own thoughts is the way in which students should be taught to write we ought to design a way for students to think of their writing in relation to the history
