up disappointed by senate allocations by alex olbrecht sports editor the student senate voted down an appeal from university productions last tuesday for increased funding for the upcoming academic year according to senate records up was approved for 317,860 out of their request for 321,560 the organization was only funded 222,000 up president john desmarais 99 said that the funding provided this year was not adequate to meet the demand for entertain ment on campus there is an overwhelming demand for shows and we didn't receive the funds we needed desmarais said attendance at other college shows has decreased and we have had an increase in attendance according to up treasurer cindy beloff 99 the appeal mentioned four main points as to why there should be an increase in funding higher expected costs a high demand for quality shows increased attendance and lack of funds received through the dean of students office all contributed to the organization's need for additional financing senate treasurer kimberly terwilleger 98 said the allocations committee only received a 4.4 percent increase in funding providing approximately 19,000 in addi tional funds to be distributed the increase won't significantly affect big groups like university productions so we decided to give the money to smaller clubs terwilleger said if we had the money we would give it to them the allocations committee was also not pleased with the lack of fund-raising by up according to senate by-laws the amount of fund-raising an organization has done for the year affects budget allocations i understand why they did that beloff said i know they want us to fundraise the lehigh community may not be enjoying as many shows next year because of the senate's decision jason horn 99 up comedy co chairpsrson is concerned about the number of shows up will be able to produce next year with the limited funds available we're going to have to do fewer shows he said after our most success ful year we were hoping to get the finan cial support although up recognized that students want more shows for next year they will end up having to cut back we have heard that people want more shows and we needed the funding increase to meet the demand horn said next year we won't have that money the question is how are we going to fill that void for example the popular comedian act no time which visited lehigh in march will return in september the comedy com mittee paid 1,750 for the march show but expects to pay no less than 2,000 for the next show the price of putting on a performance has increased horn said the cost of an every day performer has been going up and the cost of a bigger name has gone up even more people want to see the nationally and internationally known comedians and we have to pay an almost absurd amount of money jenny volchko associate dean of stu dents serves as an adviser to senate and up she does not feel this decision will have a major impact on programming for the upcoming semester if there is a hole in the programming schedule maybe another group should do something volchko said is it just up's responsibility to be the primary source of programming the dean of students office contributed about 20,000 to up's coffers this year as an experiment according to volchko this year's freshman class wanted more pro gramming previously up provided one show per weekend this year in the fall we took 10,000 in october and november as a test she said attendance increased and they were drawing different crowds each event up wanted to try it again in late january february and march we found again an interest by our students in going to these events the dean of students office will not be providing the funds again next year and up members are concerned that
