the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 38 tuesday march 31 1998 all the lehigh news first plan underway to connect campus roads by heather ignall assistant news editor the bethlehem planning commission recently approved a 2 million lehigh plan to reconstruct seidersville road between creek road and the lower saucon township accord ing to the morning call the new road would better integrate the goodman mountaintop and asa packer campuses according to anthony corallo assistant vice president of facilities plan ning and renovation the new project would also give prospective students and university visitors easier access to the university from u.s interstate 78 and hellertown road route 412 i think a new road up on goodman campus is long over due alicia almeida 99 said it is important that when prospective students come to visit the campus is attractive and easy to find their way around despite enthusiasm for the project corallo said the 2 mil lion price tag means the road won't be built this year and may not be under construction for a while the university wants to weigh the benefits of a new road against the cost but it wanted to get the city approval so the pathway would be clear before anything else develops accord ing to corallo if the approval is in place and the trustees approve funding we will build it but there is no specific timetable corallo said to the morning call according to the plans submitted by lehigh the new seidersville road would begin at the intersection of apple street and creek road near saucon park the road would then head southwest crossing the existing seidersville road and heading toward the goodman campus then the road would head northwest and link back into the existing seidersville road right before the lower saucon township border lehigh would have to pay for most of the construction but officials said the city would incur some of the costs associated with linking side streets to the new road the existing portion of seidersville road from the lower saucon township line about halfway to creek road would be eliminated and the other half would remain because there are residences on it said mike topping bethlehem's plan review coordinator access to the old seidersville road which will most likely be renamed would be provided by an intersection where the new road crosses the old topping said the new road would be about 50 feet wide compared to the 20 foot width of the present seidersville road he also said lehigh has plans to use the extra space to devel op an attractively landscaped parkway-style road by possibly adding shrubbery topping said it would make a scenic and more easily flowing entry into campus b w photo by ashley merlin lehigh's choral arts performed the johann sebastian bach mass at baker hall in the zoellner arts center saturday night see story on page 4 veteran recreates vietnam through poetry readings by chris litman news writer award winning and critically acclaimed poet and vietnam veteran w.d ehrhart read several of his poems and talked about his personal experiences in the war thursday night in drown hall ehrhart mostly read poems that were inspired by what he experienced during his service in a poem entitled the one that died he described the quick remembrance of fallen friends he said in war it is better for soldiers to quickly for get their passing and only keep their cigarettes as mementos or else risk death themselves in the next step he told of all the dangers he and his fellow soldiers faced simply by walking around setting off a mine getting shot by a sniper's bullet or walking into an ambush ehrhart described the tactics of the vietcong often times the enemy in vietnam in the poem guerrilla war they tape grenades inside their clothes they carry satchel charges in their market baskets ehrhart said even their women fight the young boys and girls it is practically impossible to tell civilians from the vietcong after a while you quit trying ehrhart described the feeling he got from being a corporal having the duty of making a list of potential targets from information sent in from intelligence and having the artillery fire upon them in his poem on target b&w photo by mike tornichia award-winning vietnam veteran poet w.d ehrhart reads his works in drown hall see ehrhart page 8 — — eusse — 88181 — f quick mm whm i men's lacrosse team order of omega the study of genetics i beat lafayette focuses on leadership shows that race is "^ a i fcjs leopards 1 9-6 and academics only skin deep men are six times more xmmm^m wmk see page 20 see page 5 see page 9 likely to be struck by mrm lightning than women wm rj sports 15-20 news 1-8 science 9-11 m golf 15 sea bed lecture 3 science briefs 11 e2 tim johnson 17 edward assmus 4 jfej ,-, . . _ source strange but true home page baseball 20 magician 5 http://sbt.bhmedia.com
