the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 34 friday march 6 1998 all the lehigh news first pastor spreads words of hope against aids by billy stonberg assistant news editor hiv-positive rev bill pepper from altoona pennsylvania spoke of his recovery from near death tuesday night in neville auditorium pepper learned he was htv positive in june of last year signs of the infection manifested themselves during the prior year as pepper's weight dropped from 231 to 200 pounds pepper said heterosexual college-age students are the fastest growing hiv infected population in the united states he told the audience about the first day he knew he was sick he felt very ill as was getting ready for church one sunday morning when i got up i knew something was extremely wrong pepper said i looked in the mirror and everything had a fog like look six weeks prior i saw my doctor about an extremely bad cough i had and he prescribed cough medicine the two years before being diagnosed with hiv pepper fought ongoing illnesses and had met with many specialists in altoona none of them however did htv tests on pepper because of his christian heterosexual background they thought i had cancer because i was not in the htv category pepper said i am not gay and i don't use drugs or have sex outside my marriage i was in the category that physi cians never tested for htv pepper said he contracted hiv at an accident scene in the 1980s he said he cut his hand while pulling a prostitute out from under a car doctors tested pepper for the virus when he was the johnson room of the university center lehigh was one of many stops for the band on its east coast tour of schools and clubs matt peskie tour manager and sound engineer said the band has a unique sound which is a mixture of rock funk jazz soul and latin styles they're definitely in the jam genre peskie said it's kind of a steely dan meets sting meets phish percy hill got its name from percy the father of jeremy hill their original bass player the band has been together for approximately five years but has recently undergone a member change percy hill now has five members joseph farrell guitarist and lead vocalist john leccese bassist nathan wilson keyboardist and aaron katz and zachary aiken wilson drummers we want to bring music to as many people as possi ble wilson said percy hill see page 20 retreat encourages student leadership by maghan cook news writer last weekend students participating in the lehigh leaders program attended a nine-hour retreat with a local leadership development organization forty-seven freshmen and sophomores attended the retreat in this the program's first year the goal of the day was to create and refine leadership qualities in the people who attended the program lehigh leaders was coordinated by susan lantz assistant dean of students and carolyn reichart residence life coordinator we hope to provide lehigh students with opportunities to gain leadership experi ence and to further develop the skills they may already have lantz said at the retreat students had a chance to participate in experimental activities role playing group work and self-analysis the team building and leadership center tlc also played an enormous role in the organization of the program's first retreat after attending the first plan ning meeting tlc was invited to direct the event the director of tlc rick praetzel helped students build leadership skills at the retreat my role in the retreat was as expert on the curricular approach to leadership on the corporate level praetzel said we concen trated on an academic approach to leader ship and team building training the retreat provided students with a glimpse into the lengthy process that leads to development of leadership qualities information about projects time man agement goal-setting and other traditional material is not what we teach praetzel noted put together students should become more aware of what it really means to be a leader students who attended the retreat agreed that its format and content proved to be very enlightening and educational philip schoen 00 enjoyed participating in some of the physical games the retreat used to help students become leaders we began with karate fighting stick drills in order to concentrate and think dif ferently schoen said then we split into
