brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 27 tuesday february 3 1998 all the lehigh news first tv shows to be made by students by natalie cantor news editor plans for student-written and produced television programming on channel 21 commenced this semester a variety of shows are planned includ ing sit-coms sports news and talk shows channel 21 currently airs lehigh sports events but often has a lot of dead air time students are being recruited to assist with all stages of the production process from writing directing and staging to acting and editing the project was conceived last year by gabe grifoni 98 former president of university productions it would allow a unique medium of expression that hasn't been seen before grifoni said when grifoni first came up with the idea he met with representatives from var ious departments across the university to determine the feasability of such an endeavor he also distributed a survey to gauge enthusiasm among members of the student body the results of both were positive so grifoni continued with the project he enlisted the aid of doug herman 98 for mer student senate president script submissions are being accepted until feb 20 at the front desk of the ulrich student center after that time grifoni and herman will begin reading through the ideas to determine which will make it into production the decision on which scripts will be produced will be made by the end of february auditions will be held for stu dents who are interested in performing on the shows production is slated for march and editing will be done in april grifoni and herman plan to have the shows on the air before final exams begin grifoni is enthusiastic about student participation in all aspects of production of the shows the thing we want to prove with this grifoni said is that students are involved and that people will watch this grifoni and herman hope to get a large abstract artist shares her work by will schenk news writer abstract artist natalie alper discussed her exhibit on display in the zoellner arts center at an informal discussion and reception friday the exhibit entitled abstractions con sists of a series of paintings created in many different media alper began the evening by encouraging questions and informality with the audi ence she then spoke about the progression her work has followed since she started in the 19705 in the beginning she did not have a physical attachment to her art which proved stifling i wanted to start to put into my work what i had been keeping out alper said when asked whether she enjoys listening to music while she paints alper said that unlike some artists she paints with the music and not to the music she does not let the music form her thought but rather uses it to fill the vacuum something to structure the space around her so that it can be controlled she also mentioned that she chooses her music carefully and enjoys such classics as bach and mozart as well as early church music and jazz abstractions is a collection done entirely with acrylic metallic pigments and pencil on canvas i think about color energy and dynam b lisa krause news writer the presidential search committee has narrowed down the application pool to fewer than 20 and anticipates a new presi dent by early summer after a semester of reviewing applicants replacement peter the i presidential i committee i the i number viable i the selection mmmmmmmmmmmmmm ' committee chaired by david williams chairman of the department of materials sci ence and engineering and raymond bell chair of the department of education anc human services is a diverse group repre senting every facet of lehigh life the com bination of students professors and other administration attempts to assure that the new president will satisfy the many different needs of lehigh assisting the selection committee is an executive committee of trustees headed by ron ulrich 66 â– both committees are extremely optimistic about the remaining group of candidates ryan faulkingham 99 is a student represen tative for the search com mittee he is extremely enthusiastic about the prospect of finding a new president soon we're looking at individuals from good schools faulkingham said the candidates are qualified and come from diverse back grounds we've narrowed down our 160 appli cants and we are very positive about 15 to 20 of them who we are considering inter viewing faulkingham said the goal is by summer to have a new president at this point in time no names of candi dates can be released the process is very confidential because the applicants do not want the peo ple at their current places of employment to know that they are looking elsewhere faulkingham said it is common courtesy the search has intensified this semester and the committee spends approximately two to three hours in weekly meetings faulkingham said that it is a hard task see alper page 8 see tv
