the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 25 tuesday january 27 1998 all the lehigh news first spring sorority rush considered a success by giselle gutierrez news writer sorority rush began last tuesday and will conclude tomorrow at 4 p.m with the distribution of bids rush is a time for freshman and sopho more women to investigate greek life as well as a time for sorority sisters to recruit new members into their houses the rush process consists of three rounds a day of silence and a preference night after each of the three rounds two houses are eliminated until the rushees nar row down their choices to two houses the sororities also eliminate women as the process goes on the final night of rush is preference night when the rushees attend two houses following this rushees fill out preference cards where they choose the sorority to which they want to belong originally 335 women registered for rush but the numbers dropped to 308 as a result of many women not qualifying due to low grades after three years of only having seven sororities lehigh has established an eighth pi beta phi colonized a chapter earlier this year this gives more women the opportuni ty to join a sorority elizabeth saggese 01 has enjoyed her rush experience at first i didn't know what to expect saggese said but each night has gotten bet ter and has made me feel more comfortable for saggese going through rush has changed her ideas about the greek system i never envisioned myself in a sorority before but now i definitely can see myself joining one she said on the second day that freshman women are on campus in the fall they are exposed to the greek system at a bagel brunch dur ing which all the sororities participate in order to introduce themselves to the new freshman women rush advisors called rho chi's from all eight sororities are assigned to different freshman halls early in the fall semester the function of a rho chi is to serve as a mediator between the sororities and the freshman women rho chi's organize activities such as barbecues with fraternities and various other events to familiarize them with the greek system kate holekamp 98 is one of the three rho chi's assigned to mcclintic-marshall al . she took on this position because she b&w photo by melissa brown from good homes plays to an enthusiastic crowd at the stage door friday from good homes makes an impression by patrick doherty managing editor the band from good homes enter tained a full house at the stage door with their unique brand of contemporary rock friday night dressed casually in t-shirts jeans and flannels the band featured todd shaeffer at acoustic guitar and lead vocals brady rymer at bass and vocals patrick fitzsimmons at drums and backup vocals dan myers at saxophone and jamie coan providing backup vocals and alternating between acoustic guitar and violin the band combined typical contempo rary music with more alternative jazzier styles one of their more unusual songs was if the wind blows i liked the way the saxophone sound ed in if the wind blows " jen wescoe 98 said the beat made it sound like you really were in a wind storm wescoe said the sound was a contrast into the woods twists turns and entertains by chris litman news writer the music department presented the musical into the woods friday night to a packed house in baker hall at the zoellner arts center a modern retelling of the grimm fairy tales the musical brought laughter and sur prises to the audience with storybook themed scenery and sprightly music however many viewers were caught off guard with the surprisingly intricate plot and real-life turn of events in the second act matt stalsitz 00 was impressed by the plot surprises i never thought of how they could have all those connections like that in the begin ning stalsitz said it was incredible the first act intertwined the stories of cinderella jack and the beanstalk little red riding hood rapunzel and the baker and his wife kasey weil 98 played the witch the main antagonist in the first act in order to gain back her youth and beauty the witch casts a spell on the baker played by matthew perricone 00 and his wife played by michelle asadourian 00 in the hopes that they would search out and find four rare items that would return her vitali ty in exchange the witch would help the common couple to conceive the child which they had been yearning for little red riding hood played by kristen crooks 99 enters the picture when she needs bread from the baker to take to her grandmother around the same time cinderella endures the torment of her two stepsisters played by erin bayliss of kutztown university and vanessa devett 99 and stepmother played by debra field adjunct assistant professor of voice in the music department cinderella wishes to be free to go to the ball and dance with the prince and escape the terrible life which she has been living jack played by brad seamans 01 lives with his mother and the two are strug gling to feed themselves the first ten minutes of the play show the characters in their separate environments alternating between parts however all of the characters end up traveling into the woods where their lives become entangled in a web of conflicts of interests at the end of the first act everything seems wrapped up in true storybook fashion with the required familiar happy endings of each of the characters however the musi cal takes a different turn in the second act as the characters realize that all isn't so merry in a fairy tale a female giant comes to town enraged at the death of her hus band inflicted by jack when he chopped down the beanstalk the musical also takes on a grimmer pseudo-realistic theme during the second act and each of the characters experiences a tragedy the baker loses his wife the prince has an affair in the woods red riding hood's grandmother dies the witch disappears and rapunzel is killed in perhaps the boldest
