in chief k eugene mercy jr 59 called for duates to continue a tradition as american as apple pie and baseball dur ing his commencement address jan 1 1 at stabler arena philanthropic giving whether it is for one's alma mater a hospital church or synagogue is a critically important american invention and institution mercy said mercy is a member of lehigh's board of trustees and a limited partner of goldman sachs & company an investment banking firm he is also a principal with granite capital international group the wealth that donors have brought and continue to bring to america is truly staggering it is a crit ical part of the social educational and scientific history of our country mercy said citing the contributions of philanthropists john d rockefeller jr andrew carnegie and george soros while the generosity of such bene factors is certainly impressive mercy reminded the graduates that they need not become business tycoons to partake of the philanthropic spirit the rewards of philanthropic involvement are just as evident in small-scale ventures as they are in the largest philanthropic initiatives he said i am thinking less about the scale of giving than about the special inclina tion to become involved mercy stressed the importance of blending business civic and philan thropic responsibilities and that it is never too early for the graduates to start trustee remembered for generosity of spirit by lisa a jones associate editor i after earning both a bachelor's and mas s degree in civil engineering donald b stabler 30 left lehigh in 1932 to become a successful businessman but stabler never did actually leave he returned to his alma mater serving as a trustee for more than 30 years and donat ing his wealth generously on dec 30 stabler 89 died at his win ter home in bal harbour fla stabler started in business as a one-man road construction company in 1 940 stabler companies inc today is based in harrisburg and along with its 11 sub sidiaries employs more than 1,200 people stabler served as chairman and chief exec utive officer until his death at lehigh stabler's contributions can be readily seen he provided the major funding for the stabler athletic and convocation center on goodman campus with his wife he helped fund the dorothy l stabler tower in lacocca hall on mountaintop campus it is difficult to put into words what don meant to lehigh interim president william c hittinger 44 saidj but obvi ously he has ensured that his legacy will live on and generations of students will benefit from his benevolence as will the university he so dearly loved he also gave generously of his time hittinger said the stablers established the donald b and dorothy l stabler foundation to sup pholo courtesy of media relations donald b stabler 1908-1997 fiscal changes in store by molly burckhardt managing online editor lehigh's annual campus-wide budget meeting jan 12 resulted in a total increase of 4.1 percent for undergraduate tuition and fees undergraduate tuition for next year will rise to 22,300 up 4.4 percent from last year room will be 3,580 up 4.1 percent and board will be 2,830 up 3.3 percent this brings the total tuition to 28,710 graduate credit hour fees are also increasing arts and sciences/engineering is up 3.75 percent to 830 business is up 1 7 percent to 600 and education is up 4.4 percent to 470 the board of trustees agreed to the parameters set for the overall budget increase jan 9 the budget increase plan calls for facul ty and staff salary allocations to rise 3.5 percent and certain departmental budget allotment increases salary increments were one of our highest priorities vice president of finance and administration rhonda gross said the planning and budgeting working group
