the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 105 no 22 all the lehigh news first tuesday november 25 1997 bonfire rallies spirit by stephanie bailer news writer students faculty and alumni gathered thursday night for the bonfire at goodman campus to celebrate the arrival of lehigh lafayette weekend the bonfire was reignited after four years by sponsors including student senate residence hall association gryphon society university productions panhel interfraternity council and the department of athletics interim president william c hittinger 44 gave a brief speech after the band jack light move played on stage and before lighting the fire hittinger said he was excited for the weekend and happy to see the bonfire tradi tion re-established the 7-foot pile of wood was then lit to begin the weekend's festivities i think it was good for the spirit and unity of the school carine allaf 01 said this is the first year since 1993 that the bonfire was included as a part of lehigh lafayette weekend the bonfire was originally organized by the dean of students and it was a tradition for many years until the lack of interest dis continued it kirk gibson 99 senate pub licity chair said i wanted to bring it back so we had an event that was organized for the students by the students there was a good turnout matt perry 01 said i think it will become one of the main events in years to come the bonfire may become an integral part of future celebrations we may hold another bonfire in the spring for greek week gibson said next time though 1993 self-help lets students treat minor symptoms by donna borak news writer got a sniffle but don't think it deserves a nurse's attention students have answered their health questions using the self-help computer since marie brown nurse educator devel oped the program it's a way for students to treat minor medical problems while also educating themselves to learn how to assess their own physical health this program was established at the student health center in the fall of 1990 brown said she created the program to help the health center run more efficiently and educate students medication and education are the main goals of this program brown said the six-station computerized self-treat ment program consists of self-assessments information and medications all medica tions in the self-treatment room are over the-counter the six stations include treatments for colds rashes headaches gastroenteritis menstrual cramps and minor cuts and scrapes before students use the self-treatment room they first register at the front desk the program begins with a question naire students type their personal informa tion and indicate the general area they are interested in diagnosing students answer questions about symp toms and are instructed how to check for things like spots on the throat thefirst section deals with minor symp toms in which over-the-counter medica tions are used if a student's symptoms are serious they are instructed to see one of the nurses or a doctor this helps nurses spend more time with serious illnesses and less time dealing with common department chair dies at 94 by brad cawn news writer retired professor of english and long time department chair j burke severs passed away on nov 13 severs who recently celebrated his 94th birthday was world famous for his work on chaucer and other medieval writers burke was one of the finest scholars to ever teach at lehigh said peter beidler professor of english after graduating from yale with a ph.d in 1935 severs came to lehigh to begin teaching severs taught several subjects in the field for both undergraduates and graduates he served as chair of the department of english from 1951 until 1969 when he retired severs continued to teach during those 1 8 years jack deßellis professor of english worked with severs and said he remembers him well severs was a professional of the old school dignified always dressed in a suit and tie even for summer classes perfect in manners deßellis said severs was considered a world-class pro fessor and became lehigh's first distin guished scholar in 1959 he was the first lehigh professor to be named a macebearer every student of severs that i have talked with admired him greatly and respect ed the standards he set in his scholarship beidler said severs is also remembered as a trustwor thy mentor to his students according to beidler severs was a man of genial humor who was always willing to give aid to a student who approached him that role also carried over into his rela tionships with his fellow teachers deßellis said severs was a supporter of his tenure promotion and encouraged all his scholastic activities he saved me from being drafted into the vietnam war in 1966 deßellis said severs pulled some strings and i got a deferment according to beidler severs spent much of his time since retirement in 1969 travel ling and enjoying life i remember that in the first fall after he retired he and his wife drove through new england to see the fall foliage beidler said he always wanted to do that but never seemed to have the chance
