the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 104 no 40 tuesday april 15 1997 all the lehigh news first former snl star gets big laughs by alexander m weimer news writer comedian kevin nealon gave 400 people a night of laughs m baker hall friday nealon former star of saturday night live made a marked entrance and exit uti lizing a video camera and taping as he got on and off the stage he introduced himself as hanz and pointed out all the girly-men and girly handles m the audience then nealon also entered the lehigh mas cot debate arguing that a mascot is supposed to impress people and here come the engineers nealon said not really impressive huh how about this and now here they come the mountain hawks now that's impressive later m nealon's performance he brought jeanette vblpe 00 up from the audience and acted like a street artist drawing a caricature of her while drawing the caricature he acci dentally smeared chalk on her face by the end of the drawing vblpe had black chalk all over her face i had no idea what was going on vblpe said i got dirty with kevin nealon everyone got to be part of the show during nealon's performance during a segment nealon took ideas from the audience to tell a comedic story nealon made up a story about how he arrived m bethlehem he used words suggest ed by the audience such as naked river and embarrassed from the suggestions he told a story m which he found himself naked drunk beat up and down by the river nealon said he came up with this part of the act when he would do the late shift m hollywood and the audience was tired he found that the tired audience responded better to getting involved nealon talked about bob vila the guy who can fix anything he said he'd love to have a show like that and if he did he'd call it this fat check this week we're going to have the kitchen remodeled nealon said that's gonna cost me 8,000 now to write the check i like to use a ballpoint pen nealon also referred to the re-release of the star wars movies he said there would be a re-release of tommy boy with an extra 60 pounds of chris farley scott henry a comedian from milwaukee provost candidate speaks at forum by m umar rahman news writer provost and vice president for academic affairs candidate nelson markley presented his views on higher education to an open forum thursday evening m lacocca hall markley who is currently the provost at the university of maryland is one of many candidates invited to campus m an effort to permanently replace the vacancy m the provost position that resulted when al pense retired earlier m the year the provost is m charge of everything but development and finance gary lutz professor of education and chairman of the search committee said it's central to the institution so we take the search process very seriously according to lutz the 16-member search committee is now m round two of the selection process the campus should know soon who will be selected to fill the position of provost and vice-president for academic affairs the provost receives reports from the deans of all four colleges as b w photo by chris faile greek affairs coordinators chris zacharda and jolly janson take part m sigma chi's beirut tournament senior auction meets expectations by sarah herchel news writer the annual senior class silent auction was held to raise money for senior year events wednesday and thursday tickets were sold at tables set up m the ulrich student center and the university center the auction featured 20 prizes most of the prizes for the silent auction were donated by local business associations and the lehigh alumni association according to senior class presi dent john franchini 97 the lehigh alumni association donated a nice watch which required four tick ets franchini said other prizes that were donated were a gift certificate to deja brew and a sweatshirt from the lehigh bookstore the largest prize was a one-night stay m a deluxe suite a bottle of cham pagne on arrival and a continen tal breakfast for two from the clarion hotel m allentown the auction was actually run as a raffle with 20 paper bags lined up on the table each repre senting a prize participants could buy one ticket for fifty cents and then they placed that ticket m a bag so they would be m for the drawing participants wrote their name and telephone number on the back of each ticket so they could be contacted if they won for items with a value of less than 25 only one ticket was needed to enter for an item with a value of 25 to 100 two tick ets were necessary and if the item was more than 100 four tickets had to be purchased all of the money raised will go to help the senior class pay for benefits such as senior week and graduation said franchini and stephanie smith 97 vice presi dent of the senior class smith was also m charge of the auction along with franchini it took a lot of time and effort to put the auction together franchini said the class of 97 is grateful to all of the donations we received from the local busi nesses everyone has really helped out especially stephanie sarah nichols 00 enjoyed taking part m the auction and was glad to have a chance to help the senior class this auction is a great way to raise money because the tickets are inexpensive and the prizes are nice nichols said i hope i can help benefit the senior class the drawing for the winners of the prizes was held thursday the 20 prizes were raffled off and a nice sum of money was raised for the senior class participants hope the auction will remain a regular event nichols said i hope this auc tion will continue to be n annual event because i think it is extremely beneficial to the seniors and to the participants see nealon page 5 see provost page
