the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 104 no 39 friday april 11 1997 all the lehigh news first campus unites to oppose violence by killian o'connor news writer students against violence held its first day of voices to speak against the growing prob lem of violence m the community sunday m packer memorial church john smeaton vice provost for student affairs said even though less violence occurs on campus than off campus this fact can hard ly be of much comfort to the victims of cam pus violence the most common inducement to vio lence is alcohol whether it be consumed by the victim the perpetrator or both smeaton said alcohol makes an otherwise decent human being do things they would never nor mally do smeaton emphasized the need for students to recognize alcohol's role m campus violence and to understand their responsibility to play a part m overcoming the problem of alcohol we need to take our roles as members of the lehigh community seriously he said barbara eisenberg 98 conducted an experiment with the audience that demonstrat ed that everyone is affected by violence m some form whether it be personally or through a family member or friend dr samuel proctor professor emeritus at rutgers university was the evening's keynote speaker proctor discussed the reason for his ongoing campaign against violence i'm standing here before you because of acts of violence that occurred on my campus when i was a sophomore at state university m virginia he said proctor explained that after his initiation into a fraternity included being beaten as a pledge he swore never to let that violence happen at his school again he also cited another instance of fraternity violence that turned deadly a pledge at monmouth college was taken to the beach and buried m a grave of sand he was left to dig his way out but never did proctor said when he made his stand against the violent initiation practices he was shunned by his friends and and even received death threats i survived the ostracization and there is now a law against these types of initiations he said proctor stressed the necessity for the united states to return to the greek idea of a lecture explores saints and catholic traditions by elizabeth burnham news writer dr susan niles explained the catholic fes tival corpus christi held annually m cuzco peru m maginnes hall monday corpus christi is a holiday that was intro duced m the middle of the 1 3th century for the purpose of catholics to show religious devo tion publically niles said according to niles the tradition corpus christi which usually falls six weeks after easter is an opportunity for priests to parade through the streets with a eucharist so people can view it people can follow two routes to the festival m cuzco one comes from the native andeans descendants of the incas and the other is an iberian route in cuzco the parade runs through the downtown to the colonial plaza niles said the people of cuzco get a lot of mileage out of a one-day celebration you start at least the night before and party for most of the week that closes corpus christi niles said whole families come to see the parade during the parade m cuzco statues or images are carried out of the central cathedral and marched through town niles said the images are of saints who repre sent surrounding churches and are brought from their parishes for the parade each saint is accompanied by a rowdy band and its own group of followers niles said they are playing terrible music because they have been drunk for eight days niles said the first saint m the parade was st anthony the patron saint of cuzco who is always depicted as an old man b w photo by chris faile members of the ick band performed sunday at the stage door along with five other punk bands from the local community volunteers preserve nature trail by killian o'connor news writer a group of lehigh students worked alongside the sierra club during an appalachian trail clean-up project saturday professor albert wurth's politics of the environment class came up with the idea to help the club kiersten dorneman 97 a student m wurth's class said wurth assigned the class an environment-related project some of the students m the class were going to arrange a food drive with the frater nities and sororities at the end of the year dorneman said some others brought up the service the sierra club was doing so we decided to go with that dorneman alicia stanfill 97 mike kuenne 97 brian fenicle 97 and aaron tieman 97 organized the trip according to dorneman during the first half of the day students cleaned up a section of the trail called bake oven knob we worked with moravian college stu dents and a group of juvenile delinquents who were doing community service dorneman said after lunch the group cleared an area that was being used as a tire dump dorneman who has done this type of volunteer work at home said she had fun working outside with other students everyone wanted to be there and help out she said both kuenne and dorneman said they hope this idea will continue next year our goal is to do this every year to treat it like a yearly service project kuenne said dorneman said she would like to have some campus organization adopt the idea it's really easy to get m touch with the sierra club she said we had a good time and it gave a bunch of students the opportu nity to do some good and meet new people see violence page 7 see lecture page 7
