the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 tuesday march 4 1997 rjtiwno-33 all the lehigh news first spunk debuts at arts center by lisa a jones assistant news editor spunk the first play per formed in the zoellner arts center and the first all african american production at lehigh opened friday night in the diamond theater the play is based on a compi lation of three stories by zora neale hurston titled sweat story in harlem slang and the gilded six bits the performance combines singing narration and guitar and harmonica playing to tell differ ent stories of african americans spunk is directed by ardencie hall-karambe a theater instructor megan bone 99 saw the per formance sunday afternoon and was impressed with the show's original style of storytelling nar ration and music it's a really great show bone said the different types of music the singing the guitar and the harmonica all really interact well together another viewer nate harkins 00 also said he enjoyed the vari ety of the production there is an incredible amount of talent both musical and theatrical harkins said it is a small group and the theater along with the small cast makes the audience feel intimate with the actors laura lakusta 00 agreed the atmosphere was intimate the actors and actresses show a lot of talent lakusta said it's very personal and it's great how the cast interacts with the members of the audience the play is definitely suc cessful in portraying stereotypes that exist she said lakusta said it was especially effective in the portrayal of the story in harlem slang tale harkins said the play did a good job characterizing the dif ferent stories i had read sweat in an english class and the perfor mance was exactly how i had imagined it would be when i read it he said bone also thought the play portrayed its subject well she said the stories are about the roots of african american life and situations that they dealt with museum showcases valley's finest talent by matthew freilich news writer zoellner arts center recently opened museum masterworks of the lehigh valley a new art exhibit that showcases a variety of historical artifacts and paintings from 14 museums and collegiate institutions in the area one painting in the museum is a portrait of a venetian commander in armor it was painted by domencio tintoretto an italian renaissance mannerist in the 1580s andrew goldberg 97 said he was impressed with tintoretto's painting because of its creativity and sense of realism the painting is very fascinating because the artist used bright colors and his creativity to bring out the soldier goldberg said what was also amazing is the fact that he made the soldier seem so lifelike another exhibit at the gallery fea tures martin guitars one of the old est family-owned guitar companies in the world two guitars are on display one was built by christian fredrick martin in the 1 700s as one of his ear liest pieces of work the other guitar was built to commemorate christian martin's 200th birthday in 1934 another instrument on display is a violin made by john antes and on loan courtesy of the moravian historical society it was the first violin in colonial america and antes was the first american com poser of chamber music this violin was part of a trio along with a viola and cello that was made for the moravian community jayson walker 97 said he enjoyed the exhibit because it allows observers to see how guitars have changed over the years he said being a guitar player it was really neat to learn some histor ical facts about the guitars b w photo by ashley merlin dr bruce smackey surprised students by wearing a chicken suit during his new product planning class last week crustacean madness claws ulrich by jennifer o'brien news writer students were given the chance to sponsor a crustacean of their choice during the lehigh university derby friday night in the ulrich student center university productions chairman of special events dave kapferer 00 said crab racing has never been done at lehigh in the past we decided to try crab racing because it seemed original creative and new kapferer said the races were conducted by jim morgan who came up with the idea of racing hermit crabs and appointed himself as com missioner for life of the national crab racing association 17 years ago morgan began the event by having the audience gather around a glass aquarium in which 100 crabs were stored each student b w photo by ei.eni andriolatos students cheer their crabs to the finish line friday night at a crab race sponsored by university productions see crab page 6 â– _ -
