plane crash friday july 16 near charleston w va the tragedy occurred on the return leg of a bedford-charles ton business trip shortly after takeoff from the kanawha county airport also killed in the crash were jack pepple the pilot and james green both of bedford and mr meliotts fath er there were no survivors an eyewitness reported he heard the motor cough as though it had run out of fuel while flying through heavy weather the plane topped a patch of trees before plunging into a hillside outstanding in student activi ties mr mellott was a member president truman this week ordered draft registration of all men 18 to 25 the registration period will be from aug 30 through sept 18 the president's proclamation called on all male citizens of the united states alaska hawaii puerto rico and the virgin is lands who have passed their 18th birthday but not yet reached their 26th birthday to begin registration at 8 a.m aug 30 following are classifications and the dates under which men can register between 8 a.m and 5 p.m 1 those born in 1922 after aug 30 will register on monday aug 30 2 those born in 1923 will register on aug 31 or sept 1 3 those born in 1924 register on sept 2 or sept 3 4 those born in 1925 register on sept 4 or sept 7 5 those born in 1926 register on sept 8 or sept 9 6 those born in 1927 register on sept 10 or sept 11 7 those born in 1928 register on sept 13 or sept 14 8 those born in 1929 register on sept 14 or sept 16 9 those born in 1930 before sept 19 register on sept 17 or sept 18 10 those born on or after sept 19 1930 will register within five days advance into western germany they must produce a show of force now that the berlin crisis demands it this is the conclusion reached by auric n dunlap newly-arrived lehigh professor of international relations russia's antics in germany continued professor dunlap are a methodical part of a pre-conceived and long-range plan laboring under the im pression that the western al lies in order to avert war will adopt a policy of appeasement russia hopes to inch her way into germany and eventually gain complete control this ac complished she plans to use germany as a springboard for soviet influence on france the low countries and great bri tain west dependent on east western germany being de pendent upon the eastern sector for her food supply russia is in a position to force the western allies to bring food in by air in order to prevent an economic breakdown in the western sec tor unless the western allies reinforce their supply route with a show of strength there by indicating to russia her mis take in thinking we will shy at the risk of war russia will con tinue her present tactics continued on page 3 russia is not fully prepared for war her present policy is based on the miscalculation that the western allies and in par ticular the united states will not fight a definite threat of war in the shape of a potent display of power will serve to halt russia temporarily this h the american policy at pres ent if we can keep russia con of lambda chi alpha social fraternity vice-president of al pha kappa psi honorary busi ness fraternity and a member of the varsity soccer team mr mellott who was captain of the soccer team during his senior year set a high scoring record for the middle atlantic intercollegiate soccer league while starring for the squad last fall billy sheridan soccer coach paid tribute to his star shortly after mr mellott spark ed the team to a win over swarthmore and first place in the league standings an air corps veteran of world war 11 during which he saw action in the european theatre mr mellott was discharged as a lieutenant before coming to lehigh he attended gettysburg college son of a prominent fulton county family mr mellott grad uated from lehigh in february 1948 with a degree in business administration after his gradu ation he associated himself with his father a successful mccon nellsburg contractor at the time of his death he was en gaged in coal stripping opera tions in charleston surviving him are his wife mrs elizabeth morton mellott his mother mrs amie kleven ger mellott a sister kay mell ott and two brothers paul and forrest mellott all reside in mcconnelsburg lehigh university has receiv ed an award for outstanding merit in college public relations especially in the field of cata logs conferred by the american college public relations asso ciation the award was made in recog nition of a new register for the university's college of arts and science published early this year and designed to emphasize the offerings of that college in contrast with the more widely known engineering curricula in presenting the award to robert f herrick director of public relations at lehigh mr lewis pointed out that the le high publication should receive special recognition even though there was not a special division for catalogs in the exhibit the register was prepared by dean philip m palmer of the college of arts and science and design ed and produced by the depart ment of public relations b&w photos by scheller spending a summer in the hot sun while doing construction work on the hill to hill bridge in bethlehem are charles h roberts arts feb 50 left and richard c emrey i.e june 49 roberts lehigh activities include assistant manager of the swimming team this year and co-manager next year sophomore football manager this year and junior manager next year emrey has played varsity baseball for three years and football for lehigh two years according to the lehigh representatives construction work on
