the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 10 4 no - 25 tuesday january 28 1997 all the lehigh news first club night attendance falls short by jordan hyatt news writer student organizations saw a disappointing turnout at club night in the ulrich student center wednesday representatives from various clubs on campus set up tables throughout the building where students could find out information about each organization participating groups ranged from the philosophy and debate clubs to rotc university productions and the hillel society maura kugelman 97 a member of the hillel society said she was surprised with the low turnout it was really quiet because i could be heard when i was talking kugelman said herman bern 98 a member of the international club said many participating students were unaware of club night and just happened to be in the building doing something else we mainly saw people who were checking their mail bern said spring club night is never as busy as fall club night baw photo by chris faile katherine mclntyre 00 gabe grifoni 98 mandy haefele 98 spencer bertram 00 and cindy beloft 99 attended club night gingrich supports gay rights crusade by m umar rahman news writer gay activist candace gingrich sister of house speaker newt gingrich said americans need to be more accepting of gays in a speech thursday in packard laboratory gradually society has started to treat us like the rest of the world but it still has a long way to go gingrich said her speech titled family matters featured her own life story and attitude change toward the con troversial issue of integrating gays into society gingrich claims she was at one point not a political person but became an activist and champion of gay rights after realizing the percep tions many people have toward gays in this country you don't wake up one morning and say i want to be an activist " gingrich said she said she was inspired to become a gay activist largely as a result of her brother's actions and votes in congress what turned me into an activist was hearing my brother's comments and becoming aware of his views gingrich said according to gingrich she was shocked when she discovered that her brother supported an amendment b&w photo by sacha dumont candace gingrich spoke in packard lab thursday about the growing rights of homosexuals in society zoellner kicks off preview season by patrick doherty news editor the theater department and other campus organizations look forward to a successful preview season for the newly-opened zoellner arts center the period from january to august 1997 will be zoellner's preview season leading up to the inaugural year beginning in september 1997 zoellner has a floor space of more than 100,000 square feet and will have facilities to accommodate the theater department the music department lehigh university art galleries and cultural affairs the theater department which will move most of its productions out of the wilbur drama workshop and into zoellner will have access to both the diamond theater and the black box theater the diamond theater is a thrust-stage the ater which seats more than 300 people the stage projects into the audience with seating provided on three sides the theater will be used for plays this semester including productions of spunk and much ado about nothing the black box theater will seat about 100 and will have a flexible layout which will enable it to be used for productions that use a variety of staging styles zoellner also has an upper gallery which has opened already and a lower gallery which will open in september each gallery will have a floor space of 2,500 square feet and will house collections which had previously been held in storage because of a lack of gallery space zoellner will also be a learning center with practice rooms and classrooms intended to educate students in all areas of the arts the center was financed through contribu tions from alumni granting organizations and the state of pennsylvania charlie ochman 97 said the zoellner arts center is a great step in diversifying the cultural environment at lehigh and providing more opportunities in the arts i am excited to see my friends perform in the choral productions ochman said see club page 6 see gingrich page 6 q¥k the longest banana split ever created measured 4.55 miles long source 1997 guiness book of world records p'llft 11 ... junior wrestler chris ayres came from behind to win his match against navy see page 1 6 sports 12-16 swimming/diving 13 track/field 14 basketball 15 wrestling 16 many lehigh students spent last semester gaining experience in the work force see page 4 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 game show 3 co-op program 4 chic steet man 5 lyceum 6 greenhouse gas increases have led to a global temperature rise and changes in climate see page 7 science 7-9 science briefs 9
