the brown and white lehigh university s student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 1 04 no 24 friday january 24 1 997 all the lehigh news first january graduates receive diplomas by kimberly shenberg assistant news editor approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate students received their degrees at the commencement ceremony in stabler arena on jan 12 dr patti t ota interim provost delivered the commencement address she spoke about changes the graduates encountered at the uni versity and the challenges they will confront in the future according to the department of labor the average college graduate entering the workforce will change careers - careers not jobs - three times ota said at lehigh we say we are not preparing you for your first job but for your last your success in life will not be deter mined by a particular job moment in time or spot on the map she said ota who was the first female faculty member in the college of engineering and applied sciences joined lehigh as a member of the department of electrical engineering and computer science in 1971 as an instructor she also serves as the faculty adviser to kappa alpha theta sorority and phi delta theta fraternity following the processional was the invo cation and the benediction which were pre sented by rev alfred schlert president peter likins gave the introducto ry remarks and awarded diplomas to the grad uates individually for every student the magic moment is walking across the stage to receive the diplo ma likins said diplomas were distributed after the gradu ates walked across the stage to be congratulat ed by president likins and the deans of their particular colleges this is the 1 lth year lehigh has awarded degrees in january joan straumanis represented the college of arts and sciences james w schmotter was from the college of business and economics harvey stenger was from the college of engineering and applied sciences and roland yoshida represented the college of education to support students straumanis said the january graduation was very personal because the number of graduates was fewer than in the spring and the ceremoney is very intimate it was a very nicely-paced ceremony straumanis said it went wonderfully and everyone got their moment lara becker 97 attended the ceremony and was excited to see in advance what her graduation will be like in june the ceremony was nice because it was small and everybody's cheering sections could be heard becker said the mainstreet brass quartet played dur ing the recessional afterward graduates and their families were invited to attend a special reception in rauch field house sarah zabrenski 97 received her bache lor's degree in both journalism and political science and is now working for a trade maga zine in washington state zabrenski said i already miss all my friends professors and the people i have got ten close to during my time at lehigh students celebrate the life of dr king by patrick doherty news editor lehigh students had an oppor tunity to join the local communi ty in a celebration of the life of dr martin luther king jr at st peter's evangelical lutheran church saturday the theme of the celebration was captured in the presentation though storm clouds block my vision there is hope the pre sentation dealt with the chal lenges facing americans who seek to bring about king's dream of a colorblind society the celebration consisted of readings music and dance with pieces performed by both the lehigh and gospel choirs the keynote speaker at the celebration was rev dr suzan johnson cook a baptist minister and author cook said speaking at a cele bration which honored the life of martin luther king jr was of great significance to her it is wonderful to be sharing with you an occasion devoted to a man whose life touched mine both directly and indirectly cook said cook started out by imagining what king would say if he was lecturing at the presentation i think what he would say to dies at 74 by lisa spitz news editor joseph mcfadden former professor and chairman of the department of journalism and communication died jan 7 after a long illness mcfadden taught at lehigh from 1942 to 1982 specializing in fiction and nonfiction writing and law of the press in addition to teaching he served as advisor to the brown and white and worked on numer ous campus planning and pub lishing committees jack lule chairperson of the department of journalism and communication spoke regularly with mcfadden to discuss the journalism department he was very devoted to lehigh's journalism department lule said after being out of lehigh for years he would still call to stay in touch with his for mer colleagues lule described mcfadden as a professor who was involved with his student's lives joseph had the most loyal students i've ever seen in relation to their professor lule said they stayed in touch with him and he stayed in touch with them he and his students had the type of bond that all professors wish to have with their students lule said mcfadden was also active in international national state and community affairs he served as president of the bethlehem area school board
