provides that the vice president shall be chosen by re counting all of the presidential ballots after the president has been elected in this system the students who voted for the president also have a voice in the selection of the vice-president election with only a minority choice s therefore pre vented over one-third of the ballots be came exhausted as a result of the insufficient expression of choices by many voters the percentages were 45 for the class of 49 36 for the class of 50 and 45 for the class of 51 many voters ap parently failed to realize the power of their subsequent choices other statistics showed that 75 of the freshmen voted sophomores followed with 62 while the jun ior turnout was 55 out of 2043 eligible voters 1273 voted for an average percentage of 64 invalid votes council at the final meeting of the group tuesday evening serving in the offices of vice-president treasurer and secretary respec tively are robert conrad earl conners and robert lenz retiring president william d'olier reviewed some of the ld.c.'s activities for the past year tion of athletic award fall smoker these activities included distribu regulation of student festivities be fore and during football games a contract with the epitome in cluding coverage and photo graphs of all dorm sections christ mas clothing drive improved housing system for housparty dates and a finish of the year with a favorable financial situa tion dorm section presidents were also elected apo requests clothing a clothing collection for the war ravaged countries of europe is be ing sponsored by alpha phi omega national service fraternity the cooperation of all the students and faculty is urgently requested fraternity and dormitory men are requested to collect their contribu tions at a central adensis monroe county pennsyl vania in the poconos from june 10 to july 3 the courses to be giv en at that time c.e 6 and 6 a are confined to students enrolled in civil and mining engineering res pectively plus a few special stu dents such as majors in geology associate prof merton o fuller under whose direction the courses will be conducted has reported that fifty-eight men have signified their intentions to enroll in the one of the courses c e 6 a is ar ranged primarily for students in mining engineering and will be shortened by about a week registration for these two courses will be held on thursday may 27 in a place to be designated in packer hall as four and three credit hour courses respectively the tuition for c e 6 will be 58.00 and for 6a 43.50 which reflect the prevailing rates of tui tion up to next semester students to live at inns the students and four instruc tors will be quartered at laurel grove inn and william inn two of the hotels in the vicinity of ca nadensis lee the retiring student concert lecture committee rang down the curtain on an unusually fine sea son wednesday night with its piece de resistance — the long awaited detroit symphony orchestra the good portion of the faculty and student body that was present with wives and guests was much im pressed with and heartily enthusi astic about the performance both of dr karl krueger's musicians and henrietta schumann pianist in the orchestra's feature pre sentation of the evening brahms symphony no 4 in e minor dr krueger proved himself the out standing conductor and musician that he is his absolutely confident manner along wth the fact that he does not use a score indicates not only his phenomenally thorough knowledge of music but also the competance of a well rehearsed or ganization the attractive miss schumann made quite a hit with her rendi tion of the very familiar second piano concerto of sergei rach manioff she made up in vigor what she and grace hall lacked in expression her quite admirable keyboard dexterity received fine support from the orchestra under the direction of walter poole the opening selection the pre lude to act 111 of lohengrin es pecialy warmed the hearts of all wagnerian enthusiasts with its dramatic and moving expressive ness while the final selection en esco's rumanian rhapsody caught the audience in its boisterously fjay mood in response to i'll do best to make my term a success confusion over system many students were confused that the runner up to the president was not automatically named vice president the student body con stitution provides that the vice president shall be chosen by re counting all of the presidential ballots after the president has been elected in this system the students who voted for the president also have a voice in the selection of the vice-president election with only a minority choice s therefore pre vented over one-third of the ballots be came exhausted as a result of the insufficient expression of choices by many voters the percentages were 45 for the class of 49 36 for the class of 50 and 45 for the class of 51 many voters ap parently failed to realize the power of their subsequent choices other statistics showed that 75 of the freshmen voted sophomores followed with 62 while the jun ior turnout was 55 out of 2043 eligible voters 1273 voted for an average percentage of 64 invalid votes amounted to 2 the laws of chance prevailed at the kappa sig house last sat urday night as part of a speakeasy party nichols elected by idc william nichols was elected president of the inter-dormitory council at the final meeting of the group tuesday evening serving in the offices of vice-president treasurer and secretary respec tively are robert conrad earl conners and robert lenz retiring president william d'olier reviewed some of the ld.c.'s activities for the past year tion of athletic award fall smoker these activities included distribu regulation of student festivities be fore and during football games a contract with the epitome in cluding coverage and photo graphs of all dorm sections christ mas clothing drive improved housing system for housparty dates and a finish of the year with a favorable financial situa tion dorm section presidents were also elected apo requests clothing a clothing collection for the war ravaged countries of europe is be ing sponsored by alpha phi omega national service fraternity the cooperation of all the students and faculty is urgently requested fraternity and dormitory men are requested to collect their contribu tions at a central poconos site of ce course canadensis in monroe county scene named lehigh will resume another of its pre-war habits in the form of the resumption of the summer sur veying courses to be held at can adensis monroe county pennsyl vania in the poconos from june 10 to july 3 the courses to be giv en at that time c.e 6 and 6 a are confined to students enrolled in civil and mining engineering res pectively plus a few special stu dents such as majors in geology associate prof merton o fuller under whose direction the courses will be conducted has reported that fifty-eight men have signified their intentions to enroll in the one of the courses c e 6 a is ar ranged primarily for students in mining engineering and will be shortened by about a week registration for these two courses will be held on thursday may 27 in a place to be designated in packer hall as four and three credit hour courses respectively the tuition for c e 6 will be 58.00 and for 6a 43.50 which reflect the prevailing rates of tui tion up to next semester students to live at inns the students and four instruc tors will be quartered at laurel grove inn and william inn two of the hotels in the vicinity of ca nadensis the rates will be 85 for room and board for the four-week period and proportionately less for the shorter course assignments to rooms in these hotels will be made in conjunction with registration the tuition for the courses is pay able at the time of registration but the board and room will be paid directly to the hotels later on prof fuller and r e crispen also of the c e department have completed arrangements at cana densis for the courses in addition to the four faculty members who will instruct the course a resi dent physician and recreational supervisor will function as in the past and a member of the biology department will inspect sanitary conditions and drinking water all undergraduates who have signified their intentions of taking the course have been notified by letter giving complete details re garding the work expenses and requirements the necessary sup plies and books are to be purchas ed beforehand at the supply bur eau prior to the war all engineering lee the retiring student concert lecture committee rang down the curtain on an unusually fine sea son wednesday night with its piece de resistance — the long awaited detroit symphony orchestra the good portion of the faculty and student body that was present with wives and guests was much im pressed with and heartily enthusi astic about the performance both of dr karl krueger's musicians and henrietta schumann pianist in the orchestra's feature pre sentation of the evening brahms symphony no 4 in e minor dr krueger proved himself the out standing conductor and musician that he is his absolutely confident manner along wth the fact that he does not use a score indicates not only his phenomenally thorough knowledge of music but also the competance of a well rehearsed or ganization the attractive miss schumann made quite a hit with her rendi tion of the very familiar second piano concerto of sergei rach manioff she made up in vigor what she and grace hall lacked in expression her quite admirable keyboard dexterity received fine support from the orchestra under the direction of walter poole the opening selection the pre lude to act 111 of lohengrin es pecialy warmed the hearts of all wagnerian enthusiasts with its dramatic and moving expressive ness while the final selection en esco's rumanian rhapsody caught the audience in its boisterously fjay mood in response to the de manding applause dr krueger splayed smetana's moldav to finish he evening by robert n swanson prohibition and all its evils revived at kappa sig party graduation exercises set for june 13
