the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first i vol 104 no 17 tuesday november 12 1996 open mic night swings stage door by christine karkazis news writer open mic night gave students a chance to display their talents in a relaxed coffee house style environment friday night at the stage door the creative arts house organizes open mic night once a semester for a fun alterna tive style of entertainment jessica mina 98 lives in the creative arts house and oversaw friday night's events it's pretty interesting she said there's poetry people getting up to play songs and comedy there's no rhyme or rhythm to it and for the most part people get up on the spur of the moment the university is on display but we just take responsibility to make it happen jen rinalducci 97 also helped organize open mic night according to rinalducci last year's open mic night was not as successful because it was held in rathbone hall which is much less personal and relaxed than the stage door the stage door has more of a coffee house feel and it's more close-knit rinalducci said at the stage door on friday night the lights were dimmed candles were burning and white paper covered each table so that people could draw on them with crayons the room eventually filled and people drank coffee and ate cookies while they enjoyed the live entertainment phil schoen 00 sang and played the gui tar early in the night i've played at coffee houses before and i thought this would be a good chance to play alone and to get noticed since i'm new here schoen said jen wescoe 98 who is in a band called 1 5 minute parking enjoyed the chance to sing by herself at open mic night two of wescoe's selections were fever and little help from my friends a well known beatles hit the songs i do myself are a different part of me and a different style of music wescoe said i enjoy open mic night lehigh needs to have more of these things to show that lehigh is not all about the hill some people were nervous at first but an attentive audience helped the performers warm up and relax after only a few moments nicole romano 97 said she has been reading poetry at open mic night since her freshman year it's a really great way to get people to show their talent and get over stage fright by performing in front of others romano said after three hours and 14 performances mina declared open mic night a hit i think people enjoyed themselves because after the intermission there wasn't a mass exodus she said hopefully we can attract a little bit more variety rake leaves at center city ministries on saturday morning the service was part of a kappa sigma fraternity community project alumnae prepare lu women for the future by pat doherty news writer career opportunities for women was the primary topic of a forum held by the women's studies department on wednesday night the forum titled women at lehigh then and now commemorated 25 years of women at lehigh and was attended by both alumnae and students the purpose of the discussion was to give students and alumnae an opportunity to share their respective experiences and to enable students to learn from former graduates about the prospects for profes sional women one change for the better that was dis cussed was a greater sense of coherence in the lehigh community as well as greater opportunities for student involvement when i was here it was like there were different tribal cultures julia klees 82 said i noticed just walking around today that there are more things to do on campus that there is more of a community nadine haynes 82 said she had thought nothing of the sex ratio which was four.men for every woman her fresh man year that was taken for granted at the time haynes said i didn't think there was anything different about working with men i was very comfortable with it haynes was the first female manager of the marching 97 lehigh's marching star tutors shape lives of children by kimberly shenberg news writer the s.t.a.r students that are ready academy is recruiting lehigh students to be tutors and mentors to local middle school and high school students who need assistance in a variety of academic areas s.t.a.r was created in 1989 by henry odi assis tant provost for special programs and his wife curtissa to motivate students to finish high school and consider college as a future option the academy pairs each lehigh volunteer with a student for a series of saturday sessions on campus between november and may tutors assist the stu dents with their communication writing and critical thinking skills volunteers also help with an sat preparation course after each lehigh student completes an applica tion form he or she must appear before a panel to be interviewed s.t.a.r is looking for both undergrad uate and graduate students in any major who have proven themselves in their studies each prospective tutor must also attend a full-day training program hema patel 96 a graduate student studying education has been a tutor since her junior year at lehigh for patel the s.t.a.r program is more than just another extracurricular activity i love it patel said after i did s.t.a.r noth ing i did on campus made me feel like i had accom plished something as much as this had karen wright 97 said the program is important because students can actually measure the progress and accomplishments they are making with the child they are tutoring it's been great wright said the kids who par ticipate get a lot out of it and the tutors do also because they get to see the impact they have on the students the s.t.a.r advisory board is comprised of see women page 5 see star page 5
