this year's race for the presidency is not the only election lehigh students will be voting in this november zeta psi fra ternity is sponsoring the 7th annual good scholar election a charity drive for cancer research this year's election which will be held from nov 10-25 is dedicated to the memory of irwin kugelman a lehigh civil and environmental engineering professor who died of cancer earli er this semester kugelman's widow ruth and her two daugh ters will lead the traditional walk unofficially named the cancer research mile from the summit to the base of the hill on nov 1 0 in order to participate in the good scholar election a cam pus organization must nominate a member with a cumulative gpa of 3.25 of higher the cost of voting is 1 the candidate who gets the most votes and therefore raises the most money wins a seven-day carnival cruise in addition 1,000 will be paid to the winning candidate's organization and all of the proceeds are then donated to the american cancer andrew braham news writer jim jacobson vice chairman of the new york stock exchange spoke to stu dents and faculty tuesday about a special ist division of trading jacobson described a specialist as an auctioneer of stock he also addressed the workings of a specialist trader and the loopholes in internet trading what concerns me the most about internet trading is the opportunity for fraud and manipulation of the gullible american public jacobson said but as time goes on people will continue to invest and the market will continue to grow so there will be room for internet trading it just needs to be regulated jacobson explained how price is determined through limit orders and market orders and the role the specialist plays in the whole scheme of things on the floor of the exchange jacobson's views were clarified by a computer demonstration tim high 97 attended the presenta tion and felt it was worthwhile i only had a vague understanding of what a specialist did high said this presentation helped me clear up what exactly they do it was very useful for me rob eising 98 also attended the presentation and gave jacobson a lot of credit for giving such a clear explanation of the specialist division i found the presentation informative and interesting but that's a hard subject to explain eising said there is a lot of insider terminology that people can get confused about lehigh's newest soror ity held an organizational rush meeting in the university center saturday the rho phi chapter of delta sigma theta came to lehigh in may of 1993 it is a core chapter which means it shares a specific charter with other institutions including muhlenberg college cedar crest college and kutztown university delta a historically predominantly black greek organization was founded in 1913 at howard university in washington d.c by 22 black women the founders envisioned an organization of college-educated women pledged to serious academic endeavors sister hood and community service according to marvetta coleman assis tant graduate school director and faculty adviser for the rho phi chapter the sorority is still dedicated to a strong sense of com munity service but is also based upon a five point program these points are economic development educational development international awareness and involvement physical awareness and involvement and political awareness and involvement coleman who is also a member of the sorority on the alumni level said there are several goals that she wants to accomplish i would like to increase the awareness of the role of responsibility and visibility of the delta sigma theta sorority specifically but the awareness of positive black greek life generally coleman said coleman became a member over 1 5 years ago at knoxville college in tennessee since then coleman has been very active with the sorority she said a delta sigma theta mem bership does not end with graduation the mission in a sorority like delta sigma theta should be looked at in a lifetime point of view coleman said tanea flanders 97 chapter president has been an active member of the group since her junior year flanders is the only active
