the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 all the lehigh news first vol 104 no 4 tuesday september 17 1996 club night promotes involvement by carter wyckoff news writer the university center was packed wednesday night for club night an event held each semester for students to see what organiza tions exist on campus of the 50 organizations that participated one of the most popular tables was from the health center lu sexual health's wheel of misfor tune allowed students to spin the wheel to see the odds of getting a disease or becoming pregnant the investment club a group that works with professional investors to create portfolios and to efficiently manage money also had a table this club with a membership of about 20 people has been given more than 125,000 from alumni to invest more than 40 new members signed with the group which is looking to expand said matthew peterson 98 the club's vice president university productions had a large crowd signing up for membership with more than 400 b w photo by shane marquess eric smith 98 and phil butler 98 of the association of minority business students spoke to potential members at club night stage door jams with coffee house series by kevin schregel news writer university productions kicked off this year's coffee house series with its most successful show ever a crowd of about 200 packed the stage door in the university center wednesday to hear acoustic guitarist tim reynolds said up concert co chair jeff freundlich 98 reynolds who is a longtime friend of dave matthews and describes himself as an honorary member of the band played acoustic and electric guitar with marthe son his two hit albums under the table and dreaming and crash up members were enthusiastic about reynolds appearance having a guest associated with a big name like dave matthews is great for the series a'ndrea fleming 99 said reynolds draws people here who otherwise might not know what the coffee house series is all about reynolds began the show with a selection called chatterbox from one of his earlier albums titled stream reynolds also played an impressive and diverse set of acoustic songs his selections varied from led zeppelin and jimi hendrix to pink floyd and peter gabriel in addition to his own creations series director alison jost 99 said having a big draw for our first production will really show students real-life learning by lisa jones news writer each semester the miniversity program allows lehigh to provide personal growth and enrichment outside the lecture hall through hands-on learning in lessons for life the miniversity a series of 12 non-credit courses gives students faculty and staff the opportunity to explore real-life subjects that are not part of the usual college ci iculum marianne deutsch administrat e coordi nator of the dean of students office said the courses provide a break from daily schedules the classes are fun and relaxing as well as economical deutsch said they also pro vide a chance to meet people the miniature university classes are sched uled during evenings and cost 12 to 30 per class most courses are limited to between 10 and 40 participants in order to maintain an interacti e and communicative stmosphere wine without pretense is a class that typically fills quickly bart springer who attended the institut ir'.emaiional du vin in blaye bordeaux and who ounded both the northampton chapter of th american wine society and the lehigh vail y chapter of the german wine society instn us the course we're trying to create fmure wine lovers springer said his course consists or four lectures through the course of these lectures students grapple with terms and ideas rather than just drinking springer said the class also focuses on perfecting techniques and students are expected to taste five or six wines a night bradly ketcher 97 hopes taking springer's course this fall will benefit him after graduation i'm looking forward to working on wall street and i'll be taking clients out to dinner ketcher said hopefully i'll be able to impress whoever i'm with yoga is another class that is filled immedi ately instructors from awakening arts stress
