the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 40 all the lehigh news first tuesday april 16 1996 ulrich named chairman of the board by andrew j cooke editor in chief at friday's meeting of the board of trustees ronald ulrich 66 was named the new chairman of the board effective july 1 . ulrich sue ■ceeds william i hittinger 44 1 who has i over | the board since july 1990 ron has already demon strated his deep commitment to lehigh hittinger said he is eminently qualified for this lead ership challenge by virtue of his exciting vision for the universi brown and white ty and his tireless enthusiasm for making that vision a reality founder and president of equinox capital management inc new york ulrich has been a lehigh trustee since 1993 and has served as co chairperson of the board's ■advancement committee and a mem ber of he college of business and economics business advisory council i feel privileged to have been a student here and now i feel especially honored to sue photo courtesy of media reiations william hittinger 44 has presided over the board of trustees since july 1990 photo courtesy of media relations ronald ulrich 66 was named chairman of the board of trustees effective july 1 malian soul singer electrifies audience by patrick doherty news writer salif keita performed his rhythmic blend of african cuban portuguese spanish and american music for students and faculty friday at broughal middle school's auditorium keita's vocal music is com plex at times using a rock or jazz tempo while still exhibiting the force and style of african tribal music after the first song keita invited the audience to stand and dance to celebrate his music by the end of the concert people were out of their seats interacting and dancing to the music students attending the concert said eita was strong and person ole i was very impressed with the performance jake luciani 99 said it was a really great con cert keita is very friendly and really got the audience involved sara karam 99 was required to attend the concert for power of the people class taught by ardencie hall-karambe profes sor of theater karam said she enjoyed the concert because keita's voice was intense and relaxed the concert was incredible she said he could reach very high notes but there was no ten sion in his voice hall-karambe who also required her classes street circus theatre and development of theatre to attend the concert was photo courtesy of international music network salif keita performed at broughal middle school auditorium on friday keita blends different styles of music to create a distinctly personal sound mighty mighty bosstones to shine for students at sun daze festivities by dan evans news writer sun daze is more than a concert featuring five bands including the mighty mighty bosstones and little john it's also more than a carnival featuring bungee running a velcro wall and cotton candy sun daze organized by university productions is a day that will feature all of these activities at sayre field on sunday free of charge with a lvaic id the concert/carnival is marking the end of greek week and the beginning of studying for finals the event is being sponsored by the intrafratemity and panhellenic councils the residence halls association wlvr and the pepsi corporation the purpose of the day is to bring people together to celebrate the university said jeff freundlich 98 co-chair of 1-iin daze we hope m get the entire lehigh commu nity together in one spot and have a blast freundlich said the event will include a concert on a 40 foot stage featuring the music of the mighty mighty bosstones little john cherry popping daddies spring hill jack and a lehigh student band jigamoga the music styles of these bands vary from ska and funk to hardcore with a little bit of the sound of they might be giants thrown in for good measure freundlich said dancing of all sorts will be on the grass of sayre field even those who do not enjoy this kind of music will find plenty to do at the carnival which will take place at the same time the events will include bungee running a velcro wall sumo wrestling frisbee art and a wide variety of other activities there will also be food drinks and cotton see chairman page 6 see keita page 5 see bosstones page 6 the women's lacrosse team rocked the mighty mighty bisons of bucknell on saturday see page 16 sports 13-16 men's tennis 16 men's lacrosse 16 alpha sigma phi fraternity hosted a kickball tournament for the bethlehem boys and girls club see page 4 news 1-6 world news briefs 2 sorority tutors 3 turn on some bosstones and read about the effects of different kinds of music in soothing the average savage student see page 7 science 7-9 scienceßriefs 9 in san salvador drunk drivers are punished by death before a firing squad i source 2201 fascinating facts by david louis
