the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 39 friday april 12 1996 all the lehigh news first quayle examines women's roles by kristen chanley assistant news editor former second lady marilyn tucker quayle focused on the role of women in con temporary american society wednesday night in her lecture sponsored by the visiting lecturers committee in the past 10 years women have gone through a big change and are continuing to change today quayle sak quayle looked at women's changing roles in both the professional and social sense she said that in the past women's profes sional roles have been restricted to those of rare trailblazers who beat the odds today women in professional fields are as ready as their male counterparts to break into all levels of administrative leadership as we see the number of women in pro fessional fields increasing we are going to see massive increases in the board rooms of our companies quayle said we have seen the number of women in state legislatures increase dramatically quayle also said there is a bright future for women in politics is a bright one we are going to see a quantum increase in women in political positions in the next 10 years quayle said then we will see someone who will move to be a viable presi dential candidate and someone who will not be known because she champions the women's issues " women along with minorities must be seen as political figures who look to serve the best interests of everyone quayle said for a woman to get ahead in politics today she cannot just be a woman's candi date she said there is no such thing as women's issues there are social issues we are seeing women candidates that represent everyone now as quayle discussed the social role of contemporary women she said that attitudes about women and marriage are changing she explained that years ago most women concentrated on their careers and were looked down upon when they married young this was because it seemed to betray the women's movement when professional women chose to leave their fields and concentrate on a family thank goodness this view is changing photo courtesy of media relations marilyn quayle said in her speech that in order to focus on women's social roles the family must be focused on as well new director works to strengthen foreign ties by lisa spitz news writer in an attempt to strengthen the university's relations with international students and alumni christine smith has beer appointed director of international advancement smith who was the director of internation al development and foundation relations will now work in the international education office to coordinate activities that prepare students for a global society the specific goals of the university are to recruit additional international students increase activities for alumni outside the united states increase corporate contacts and internship opportunities abroad and secure additional resources for international activi ties smith said alan pense provost said the position of director of international advancement will help the university in the international arena there is great potential in the field of international advancement education and exchange pense said i think that it's useful for us to make the campus more international there are many foreign stu dents who are highly qualified and may not think of lehigh smith's new responsibilities also involve building relationships between faculty staff and prospective students lehigh's faculty and staff are frequently asked to present papers and attend conferences worldwide and many of them enjoy meeting with prospective students and alumni smith said part of my job will be to coordinate as many of those activities as possible the director of the international education photo courtesy of media relations christine smith hopes to make l.u more attractive to foreign students a.c.m sponsors programming talk by bill scales news writer brian kernighan head of the computing structures research department at at&t bell laboratories gave tips on comput er programming to students a;.u faculty tuesday at lewis lab the idea is to find what we're doing wrong correct and learn to program better kernighan said the ideas behind the lecture were actually derived from a book about using the english lan guage correctly over 120 audience members learned new ways to improve their programming through sim ple techniques which kernighan says are often overlooked it helped me realize some of the errors i make when program ming and i now have a better programming style because of it chris dombrowski 99 said it showed us our mistakes in a humorous sense instead of a stuffy engineering lecture it was fun entertaining and enjoyable after opening with a far side cartoon to set the tone of the lec ture kernighan gave over 20 helpful tips and hints about cor recting poor programming computers are too hard to pro gram and too hard to use kernighan said by teaching to program better we can avoid the lit tle nroblems which hold us back 3y showing students how to write their programs uetter we can teach them to solve small problems elan freydenson 98 presi dent of lehigh's association for computing machinery a.c.m is responsible for kernighan's talk at lehigh we are trying to cater to as many people as possible he said kernighan is a promi nent figure in the computer field and something like this helps to let a lot of people know that a.c.m exists not only did kernighan agree to speak but he also used the money he received for speaking to sponsor a computer program ming competition to be held on campus next fall the next and final a.c.m sponsored lecture will be held april 23rd see quavle page 7 see smith page
