the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 16 tuesday november 7 1995 all the lehigh news first mountain hawk adopted as mascot by grete haentjens editor in chief for the first time in its 130-year history lehigh has adopted a sports mascot images of the lehigh mountain hawk were revealed to the publ for the first time today ron ticho assistant vice presi dent for university re lations served as li aison to the student senate for the mas cot project he said the idea was student generated but because students alone could not get the project off the ground senate asked the depart ment of athletics to come up with ideas athletics then hired a professional firm to design a mascot the sean michael edwards firm of new york city was hired last may to design a mascot the firm has designed or revised mascots for professional and collegiate teams including the villanova wildcats the florida gators and the new england patriots the firm said a mascot should include five basic concepts it should be an animal to prevent racial or gender bias it should not be an object like the lehigh l-train it should be native to the area it shou id be unique and it should appeal to students and merchandisers the company first presented the mountain hawk in the beginning of the semester and no alternative mascots were seriously considered ticho said ticho would not say how much the project cost but he said the firm charges 25,000 to 100,000 per project some board of trust ees members along with alumni they solicited paid for the project ticho emphasized that none of the money for the design came from lehigh's budget the athletics department will pay for any application of the mountain hawk concept about 200 members of the lehigh commu nily including trustees student senators some mem bers of the student athlete council the interlvater nity council the fanhellenic council and others signed a confidentiality agreement and lcx>ked at the mascot before it was released the design firm suggested keeping the mascot confidential and sent out surveys to a limited number of people affiliated with lehigh to get ideas for what a lehigh mascot would entail certain character sties such as pride aggressiveness ind enthusiasm stcx>d out no one is sure how students will respond to the mascot but ticho said students opinionscount most alumni might not like it or the community might not like it but the students are there every day and they will become alumni down the road ticho said it wasn't ac cepted by navy when they introduced the goat it wasn't accepted by cornell when they in troduced the bear so who knows if this will fly the mascot incorporates the lehigh colors of brown and white with gold accents but green will now also be a largest fraternity philan thropy chi has 222 chapters in the united states and canada and most of them participated in the food drive inter nationally lambda chi hoped to raise more than 500,000 pounds of food last year the food drive was the biggest philanthropy event spon sored by a fraternity lambda chi brother doug borkowski 96 organized of the event i coordinated the food drive by mapping out the areas in which we were collecting food borkowski said we went to every fraternity and sorority and dropped 1 800 bags around the bethlehem area many brothers were excited to be a part station z1(x came to the stage door wednesday to help make stu dents feel more comfortable when talking about sex ( ne of dr judy's main goals in her talk was to clear up some of the myths people have about sex dr judy shared with the audi ence a myth that her mother taught her as a teenager her mother told her not to kiss her boyfriend when they were weaiing only bathing suits in the ocean because she might get pregnant her mother told dr judy that sperm can travel through bath ing suits as well as ocean water she addressed other sex myths through interactive conversations with the audience for example she addressed why women can't get pregnant if they swallow semen she used humor as a learning device by comparing getting pregnant by swallowing semenwithgetting preg nant by swallowing pizza can you imagine if a woman had a baby pizza what it would look like dr judy said another use of humor was a little caesar s pizza commercial in which an orangutan chooses two female orangutans over one dr judy and the audience discussed the ad and concluded most men prefer two women to one dr judy also answered direct questions involving sexual relations that the audience had written down interaction dr j idy wanted the audience to come to eon elusions about the answers lo ques tions people had asked she did not accept the answer i don't know dr judy said many people are uncomfortable talking about sc because they are self-conscious about their bodies through discus sion the audience concluded women worry about physical attributes in cluding breast si/e and weight while men worry about penis si/e dr judy reassured the men in the audience that the average penis si/e is five and three-quarters inches she said the myth that the average penis is approximately 1 1 inches long is an
