the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 8 tuesday october 10 1995 all the lehigh news first pre-game tailgates cut to two hours by molly maginn news writer for the first time in lehigh foot ball history prc-gamc tailgates have been limited to only two hours in stead of the traditional three hours tailgates now start at 1 1 a.m and end at 1 p.m after several years of petition ing by both the cross country team and the athletic department the first hour of tailgates has been success fully eliminated the cross country team's track runs directly through the middle of the tailgating field because of the conflicting time the coaches were unable to schedule home meets on football saturdays this year the cross country team needs have taken precedent over the students and alumni that come to enjoy the pre-gamc activities this new time slot will allow the cross country team to hold home meets at murray h goodman stadium but allow tailgaters to have two hours for partying on the field interfraternity council president ben malekzadeh 96 is sympa thetic to the needs of the cross coun try team but he wished that the students had more of a part in the time change tailgates arc held on the last mile of the cross country team's course we were in the way - it's completely understandable that something had to change malekzadeh said however stu dents were neither active in the deci sion nor were they well-informed that the proposed change would be in effect for the first tailgate frater nities only found out about the time change when they went down to greek affairs to register their house for tailgates jolly janson greek affairs co ordinator said the time arrangements were finalized over the summer when the students were not here at school greek affairs and the athletic department had a meeting this sum mer to discuss tailgate procedures making sure there was a general understanding janson said the athletic department brought to our attention the conflict between tail gates and the cross country team we discussed our options and tried ha w photo by daphnie sicre after two hours of tailgating on sept 30 this gentleman opted for a nap over watching the game against new hampshire lehigh alumnus sentenced for killing of son by abbasia khan assistant news editor lehigh alumnus james alan austin 91 was sentenced to 12.5 to 25 years in state prison for shaking his one-month old son to death the baby jonathan alan died jan 17 in children s hospital of philadelphia after being in a coma since jan 8 austin said he shook his son to stop him from crying northampton county judge jack a panella said he gave austin the maximum sentence avail able under state law for third degree murder this case differs from others involving child abuse because austin paid more than 39,000 for phyllis huddleston an indiana resident to bear this child there is no question this child was bred for the purpose of sale panella said robert badenoch 98 agrees with the judge that the infant was really a monetary figure every time austin gets mad at the child he 11 see 39,000 not an actual person he said although austin is responsible for jonathan ' s death he said he feels a lot of pain and sorrow even if i live to be 100 i'll never get over what i did to my son austin said in the morning call austin's uncle robert helman said society is partly to blame for his nephew's crime a society that would permit an untrained single young man to buy a day-old baby is partly to blame for his crime ... and i'm ashamed helman said in the morning call sarah wolfe 97 said austin received a fair sentence for his heinous crime this case was a good message toother people who abuse children she said wolfe said society should not allow a single man to purchase an infant suggesting a law should be passed to prevent this kind of thing from happening again there should be some kind of legislation for surrogacy but it shouldn't be as stringent as adoption she said huddleston is suing austin and the infertility jazz artist of the year captivates audience by lisa spitz news writer saxophonist joshua redman rolling stone jazz artist of the year received a standing ovation at his concert saturday night in broughal middle school's auditorium the crowd cheered and ap plauded until redman and his band came out for an encore ending the night with the song remember redman said in an interview he had a great time at the concert and was honored to have the opportunity to express himself musically music comes from the substance of feelings redman said redman said he loves all types of music but that jazz is the most re warding in his life improvising jazz music allows you to express yourself honestly and composing music at the mo ment is one of the elements of im provisation he said redman was pleased to see so many young people at the concert it was nice to see so many people from our generation he said lehigh students enjoyed the show and the opportunity to get off campus for a saturday night elyse kemmerer 98 wanting a cultural experience other than the hill decided to see redman after hearing rave reviews i loved it he made the sax sound funny like it was laughing it didn't sound just like a sax kemmerer said khalfani t magee a graduate student said he has been listening to redman for a while and was looking forward to the concert magee said he enjoys listening to redman play because the musician is one of his peers i felt privileged to be here be cause he is my age and playing jazz magee said steve goldberg 98 said he en joyed the music but some of the songs were too busy i thought that some of the songs had too much going on at once but most of them i liked a lot goldberg said matt peck 96 said it was a change from standard lehigh music redman filled a featured musi cian role on the film kansas city and performed on the musical soundtrack of 42nd street vanya among his many awards and honors redman received a grammy award nomination in 1994 for best instrumental performance please see tailgates page 6 please see austin page 6
