taken for labor management regulation and steps to be taken in the maintenance of world peace two separate committees were established the first the proposi tions for steps to be taken for the maintenance of world peace the second considered propositions for steps to be taken for labor-man agement regulation each college with representatives on both com mittees presented its own bill so that all colleges might have their bill considered lehigh bill accepted on the committee for main tenance of world peace the bill submitted by the student repre sentatives from lehigh was the one adopted by the committee the lehigh proposal was that a world federation be established the committee for the main tenance of world peace came to the conclusion that the best hope for a lasting world peace lies in the effecting of some necessary changes through the united na tions the decision that an effort should be made to curb the veto power was reached a proposal that a united nations army be established and that there be some sort of control over the production of bacteria bombs and gas bombs and the like was made and ac cepted use un more the committee also agreed that there should be a strengthening of the social and economic council of the united nations the proposal that the unted states use the power of the united na tions more was made and accept ed there was a special resolu tion criticizing the action of the united states on the palestine question lehigh was represented on the committee by robert mertz 48 paul maleson 49 albert ru benstein 49 and mario d antonio 50 the committee on labor man agement regulation made num erous decisions most of the in volving suggestions for changes to be made in the taft-hartley bill a decision that union funds should not be used for political purposes was made after a pro longed debate on the matter a proposal for the extension of social security benefits to em ployees not presently covered under the social securities act was accepted a proposal for com pulsory arbitration of labor-man agement disputes wais rejected lehigh was represtented on this committee by ray hartman 50 and james gentles 48 phi deltas 100 years old lehigh val ley alumni club on wednesday evening march 17 at the north ampton county country club o j tallman pennsylvania state senator who is also president of the general council of the fra ternity effortless grace that belies the difficulties of the arrangements his piano is heard to telling effect in the beau tiful theme of the thornhill band snowfall which he composed and on virtually all of the dis tinctive claude thornhill arrange ments that have made his band so outstanding here too dance beat is interwoven with the tech nique of the classical style of music served in pacific claude dies in florida dr harry m ullmann professor of chemistry and chemical en gineering at lehigh and for 43 years prior to his retirement an active member of the faculty died last week in melbourne fla fol lowing an illness of four months dr ullmann after receiving his b.a and ph.d at john hopkins university studied at the univer sity of munich and the ecole dcs mines in paris france in 1895 he came to lehigh became head of the department of chemistry and chemical engineering in 1912 he remained in that position until his retirement in 1938 listed in who's who in america dr ullmann was the author of many articles on chemistry and was a member of numerous chemi cal societies including the ameri can institute of chemical en gineers and the royal chemical society he was honored by the alumni and the university in 1937 when the new wing of the chem isthy building was named in his honor since his retirement he has been actively engaged in re search and consultation work in the field of chemistry leith and seidle to attend parley john d leith and charles a seidle associate deans of students will attend conferences in chicago during the following two weeks dean seidle will represent le high at the national conference on higher education sponsored by the national education asso ciation from march 21 to 26 he will serve as recorder for a group of 25 college and university ad ministrators studying the problem of tuition and student fees other issues to be studied by the 500 university representatives registered for the conference in clude the problems of student per sonnel organization curriculum and teaching faculty relations and administration leith to represent lehigh dean leith will represent the university at the annual meeting of the american college personnel association which will also meet in chicago from march 29 to april 1 all problems in the area of the functions and duties of the dean of students and the director of personnel services will be con sidered at the feessions of this meeting the town council will give a spring dance in drown hall tues day april 10 music will be given by a five piece dance band and records admission is free to all town men 75 cents to others re freshments will be served tc to sponsor dance exchange tickets for scl concert students who want to hear the detroit symphony orchestra which will be brought to lehigh on friday may 7 by the student concerts-lectures committee are requested to exchange their activi ties coupons for tickets at the re gistrar's office at any time until saturday april 10 each student may purchase one university guest ticket for 60 cents for his wife or date at the same time that he exchanges his own activities coupon to insure that all lehigh students who wish to hear the detroit symphony will have a seat tickets are being re served for them during this week and the first week after spring va cation after april 10 students may purchase as many guest tickets as they want ordnance group invites the lehigh bethlehem post of the american ordnance associa tion is extending an invitation to all students who are interested in ordnance affairs but who are not enrolled in the military depart ment to attend the april 7 meeting in packard laboratory at present the membership in cludes representatives of the larger firms of the lehigh valley such as bethlehem steel mack truck
