the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 103 no 1 friday september 8 1995 all the lehigh news first murders lead to increased security by andrew j cooke associate editor lehigh's campus police has increased secu rity since two bethlehem girls were murdered near lookout point in june eugene dax director of campus police said part-time security guards have been hired and will be stationed at lookout point from 8 p.m to 2 a.m every night dax said these security guards will ask any one without lehigh identification to leave during that time and will ask all people to leave the area after 1 1 p.m when daylight savings is over they will patrol the area between 6 p.m and 2 a.m these security measures will continue for at least a year dax said an emergency phone has also been installed at lookout point bethlehem residents jennifer grider 17 of 601 laufer sl and mary orlando 15 of 530 e sth st were found dead shortly after 10 p.m on june 29 at lookout point where they apparently went to enjoy a take-out dinner after grider's i mother's camaro the num i ber wounds has not i been released by the i police it is known they i were mm i police said it is i the girls were i raped or assaulted since i both were fully i clothed robbery also i has been ruled unlikely by bethlehem police i orlando was found in a nearby meadow while grider apparently was able to crawl back i to the car where she died the bodies were found i by four women i we need to have students understand that it might not necessarily be safe not just at lehigh but everywhere john at lehigh but everywhere the two girls deaths was a tragic thing but it happened 25 feet away from the highway it could have happened anywhere but it happened here it's more an example of a problem car accident on route 22 just before final exams last semester nguyen was the driver in a may 3 collision with a flat-bed truck one hour from campus he was returning to lehigh after a basketball game accident and had been fasting for a blood test the day of his death nguyen became exhausted while playing basketball and left the game early to return to school police be lieve nguyen died instantly lindsey ellison senior news editor lehigh student bradley tay lor 97 was pronounced dead on the morning of june 1 1 at his father's home in warren n.j due to an overdose of heroin according to taylor s mother terry taylor was out drinking alcohol with his high school friends he arrived at his father's house taylor's permanent resi dence around midnight and used the indoor jacuzzi right before taylor entered the jacuzzi he snorted heroin given to him by his friend mike while in the hot tub taylor's heart slowed and his friend noticed he was sleeping mike woke him up and helped him out of the tub and taylor then vomited on the pool deck he choked on his vomit and fell unconscious according to warren police mike called 91 1 and police arrived at 4 13 a.m after paramed ics tried to revive him taylor was declared dead at 4:43 a.m from a self-induced overdose prosecutor nicholas bissell said according to alan shapiro pre vention specialist from the office of alcohol and other drugs heroin slows down the breathing rate when mixed with alcohol it causes an ef fect in which the two drugs together have greater total effect than the sum of their individual effects shapiro suggested that maybe both the chemi cals in taylor's body and the hot water slowed his body down which caused taylor to fall asleep when taylor's family heard the news they were both shocked and confused taylor was an all-star athlete in high school and a key player on the varsity wrestling and soccer teams he entered lehigh in 1 993 and maintained a 3 4 cumulative grade point average in the
