the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 36 all the lehigh news first tuesday march 28 1995 lecture reveals increase in date rape on campuses by jennifer tzeses news writer joan spade associate professor sociology and anthropology said last thursday in a lecture date rape is increasing at an alarming rate on college campuses including lehigh one out of four women in col lege will be raped or experience at tempted rape spade said in 1991 , spade conducted a sur vey at lehigh of 672 female and male students using a majority of fresh men and members of the greek sys tem spade posed questions about the social life at lehigh including spe cific questions about students sex lives and sexual history the results were overwhelming spade said twenty-seven percent had been victims of date rape and of that num ber 24 percent of those women ac knowledged the act as rape twenty two percent said they were raped while at lehigh other women described the act as a result of serious miscommunica tion spade said only 3 percent of the males sur veyed actually admitted to forcing the women into having sex spade sent graduate students to fraternities labeled as high risk and low risk for potential rape by other students in the fraternities labeled high risk students found very little oppor tunity for men and women to talk and get to know each other the men and women who already know each other are less likely to abuse spade said myla goldman 94 was a mem ber of i care about rape every where lehigh's program to deal with rape she said there is very little respect between men and women at lehigh and cutting back on alcohol will not change the situation carolyn okola,'9b agreed the social scene at lehigh does not en courage healthy male and female re lationships at lehigh no one ever really talks at parties people get drunk and then randomly hook up okola said girls are putting themselves in un compromising positions it is easy to misinterpret a woman s action as she air force rotc reaches out by kyra shur news writer lehigh university's air force rotc held a reach ing out to children day on saturday in an effort to open communication between the kids in the bethlehem com munity and students the all-day event focused on decisions that young people make on a daily basis said douglas miller air force rotc cadet and coordinator of the event the idea came about from a tutoring program at broughal middle school with which rotc is involved miller said the kids that were being tutored had a hard time concentrating on school because of other issues facing them they were getting into fights lacked inter est in excelling academically and some were getting involved with drugs miller implemented the rotc day in order to address these issues the day began at 9 a.m with a karate demonstration that taught them about discipline and self control afterward they watched a computer demonstration given by tom foley and then watched skits performed by members of rotc the groups of kids called flights rotated through three interactive academic activities the activities focused on police diversity issues and educa tion the police program was held in lowergrace and was minority prospective weekend introduces students to college life by alexis ohls news writer the office of admissions held its annual minority prospective week end for 43 high school seniors last weekend maurice willis senior assistant director of admissions said the week end gives the prospective students more exposure to lehigh we hold interviews mostly to answer questions and to get to know the students a little more person ally willis said if all goes well this weekend students may feel lehigh is a place they feel like stay ing each high school senior was as signed to stay with a lehigh under graduate from thursday afternoon until saturday the weekend started with vari ous activities on thursday night so prospectives and hosts could get to know each other friday was filled with attending classes with students interviews a semi-formal dinner with speaker glenn grant lehigh night at the apollo and a pajama party at the umoja house saturday there was a breakfast and workshop for parents and the weekend ended with a president's luncheon many of the prospective students were present at the annual lehigh at the apollo show at the stage door friday night lehigh students participated in the variety show and the perspec tives were also encouraged to get involved sheehan lake a high school se nior from flemmington new jer sey spent the weekend with haji glover 96 although he is still undecided between lehigh and carnegie mellon university lake said was glad to spend the weekend to get a closer look at the campus i think it is so important to actu ally spend time on campus to get a feel for the school lake said in the college brochures and catalogs all of the schools look nice i think you actually have to come and see for yourself glover also participated in the prospective weekend as ahigh school senior he was undecided between le high and university of illinois but felt that the weekend gave him the chance to make up his mind and decide which school would make him happy i could really check out the cam pus and i had so much fun that i decided to come glover said the admissions office has a/ready offered acceptance to most of the students and he weekend was meant to help the students make their final decisions jenny dejesus 98 participated in the weekend last year before de ciding to come to lehigh she said she was torn between lehigh and drexel university but said the weekend definitely made the difference because of the people she spoke with and the helpfulness of her host for the weekend i was able to speak with so many people including an engineering pro fessor who actually remembered me when i came here dejesus said dejesus said it was a good way for her to integrate herself into le high even before coming it was also nice to recognize faces around campus because i met so many people that weekend dejesus said susie grossman a prospective b w photo hy oaphnie sicre as the weather eases from winter to
