thyself o my spirit , a hymn combining the feeling of the pre vious selection with a quiet re straint not always apparent in bach male strength supported throughout by the en tire string section of the orchestra the male chorus of 90 next pre sented zion hears her watch man's voices many thought that the strength and purity of the male voices showed off the tonal quali ties of bach's music to its best ad vantage featuring the oboe and the bas soon with the subdued support of the string section the orchestra presented bach's suite in c the introduction and fugue had an elusive melody and a forlane and produced possibly the best instru mentation of the suite magic voices lord are thine eyes not searching for the righteous the final selection of the first section of the program was considered by some listeners the standout presen tation of the evening the mixed choir sang the massive hymn with a power and precision that swept away the heat of the crowded gymnasium and absorbed the au dience into a sounding board for the magic voices for a full twenty seconds grace hall was silent after the piece then as one the audi ence clapped its acclaim following the intermisison the choir presented the inspiring mass in b minor this one of bach's best known compositions depicts in music the life of christ again the voices blended in a strange but poignant hymn the kyrie eleison each section bass baritone alto soprano carried the melody then by sections the voices combined until the aggregate voice of the entire chorus rose in magni ficent harmony omnipresent stir ring crucifixus et in carnatus est followed the restrained violins served as a backdrop for the plaintive strains signifying christ's foreboding of his fate in crucifixus dignified mournful the chorus reflected in its precision blending the pain and hope that pervaded the calvary as christ was consigned to the cross final program selection was hosanna in excelsis in which the chorus sang the
