the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded m 1894 vol 102 no 27 tuesday february 7 1995 all the lehigh news first here we go again b&w photo by daphne sicre late friday night a major storm covered lehigh's campus with almost 8 inches of snow it was the first significant snowfall of the year for the university reminding many students and professors of the headaches and fun of last year's blizzard the chore of shoveling snow is back and students are again experiencing the familiar blast of colder more frigid temperatures professor receives honor by diane shelton news writer peter beidler lehigh s lucy g moses distinguished professor of english has been named the recipient of the robert foster cherry chair for distinguished teaching at baylor university m waco texas the robert foster cherry chair for distinguished teaching was established by the late robert foster cherry who graduated from both baylor's undergradu ate program and the school of law cherry established the chair to showcase and honor extraordinary teachers as the chair for the 1995-96 academic year beidler will receive an award of 100,000 and will be teaching a full course load at baylor according to lehigh's office of media relations nominees must have extraor dinary teaching skills and strong effects on students selection for the robert foster cherry award began m the fall of 1993 when professor beidler was nominated by thomas hanks a professor at baylor university beidler met thomas hanks at a conference m 1993 and was approached by him last fall to see if he was interested m being nominated to be nominated beidler sent a list to a selection committee of eight to ten students he had taught baylor then contacted those students indi vidually to investigate his teaching style and ability although beidler will only be m texas for a year he is excited about the prospect of something different this is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and to have a different experience beidler said beidler will be teaching full-time both semesters at baylor his classes will include a course on chaucer a graduate seminar m medieval drama and a course m native american literature cherry's awards which are believed to be the u.s.'s largest monetary awards by members of the profession are given annually to outstanding professors m the en glish-speaking world who are honored for their ability to communicate m the classroom since he began at lehigh m 1967 beidler has held many prominent positions he was previously the acting vice president for student affairs the faculty associate to the provost and director of the freshman writing program he has been the recipient of the junior and senior lindback awards for distinguished teaching as well as being named the national professor of the year m 1 983 by the council for advancement and support of education grant awarded to strengthen cultural studies lehigh receives money from the national endowment for the humanities by carolyn delph news writer the national endowment for the humanities neh has awarded a 575,000 challenge grant to the col lege of arts and sciences to expand a variety of lehigh's international and multi-cultural programs the grant is conditional on lehigh's ability to match those funds with 2.3 million christine d smith assistant to the vice president for development is coordinating the fund-raising to match the grant we already believe we have sup porters to whom we can go we plan to work with alumni to raise some of the money because the topic is inter national and multi-cultural studies we will look to those with particular interest m these areas to help raise the money smith said the college intends to raise funds for the latin african and asian american studies other projects include the expan sion of jewish studies faculty devel opment theater and literature and developing the world view room to be more accessible according to smith the grant was initially rejected because of the prob lems that lehigh had with finding matching funds the national endowment ap proved all of lehigh's projects but it did not provide matching dollars to fund all of them smith said in spite of this we will seek outside support for all of the projects be cause they fit into the university's overall strategy the university originally re quested 900,000 from the neh to be matched by 3.6 million by le high the eventual amount awarded to lehigh was 575,000 enough to complete many of the proposed projects as well as some additional future ideas w beall fowler interim dean of the college of arts and sciences described the application process as long and a task that the university is familiar with it's not much different from a research proposal the strategies are essentially the same fowler said fowler also said the fust step m obtaining a grant such as this is to simply become aware of the oppor tunities available then it is neces sary to identify areas m the college of arts and sciences that need to be addressed after this piece of the application is completed projects which fall un der the particular focus - interna tional and multi-cultural studies m this case - are put together to form a need-based package finally the application is sub jected to an extensive review process by members of the neh who are familiar with the schools applying for the
