the brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 18 all the lehigh news first tuesday november 1 5 1 994 stenger named as dean of engineering college by jonathan rosenfeld news writer after a 10-month search harvey g stenger took over the reins of the college of engineering and applied science on nov 1 becoming the youngest dean in the history of the university stenger s appointment was the result of an intense nationwide search conducted by a panel of faculty during the search stenger served as the interim dean the position was left vacated by the death last spring of the college's former dean sunder h advani stenger has spent 11 years on lehigh's staff starting out as an as sistant professor of chemical engi neering then full professor and then on to director of the university's en vironmental studies center some see stenger 37 as just a young face but stenger has a long agenda to gain more notoriety for the college of engineering i always want to make things better he said i would like to see the quality of stu dents increase the placement after graduation improve retain more stu dents in the school and work on the college's reputation and morale alan w pense university pro vost and vice president for academic affairs said stenger is ready for the challenge."he has brought to this position an enormous amount of en ergy creativity and enthusiasm along with the ability to communicate and build consensus pense said vaughn bigelow 96 a civil en gineering major said before i had never seen a dean around school now i see this guy speeding around the halls smiling i think it's a great change from some professors who don't even lift their head up improving theenergy level around the engineering college is on the top of stenger s priority list i can see it changing already with enthusiasm nothing is impossible stenger said stenger began his quest for fac ulty recognition with a program hon oring devoted faculty researchers who have done a million dollars worth of research for the school stengerplans on having their names engraved on the stones of the alumni memorial building's new patio alumni are another group stenger feels has been neglected and plans on communicating bet ter with them through a newsletter i would like students and fac ulty to think of this college like a club one of the things i would like to accomplish is to get closer con tact between people stenger said b aw photo by daphnie sicre from left to right sophomores glenn tolchin greg boye and seth gollin prepare the spaghetti dinner for luigi fiji photo courtesy of office of media reiations harvey stenger off-campus students struggle with landlords with little university help ibewiflsßmfffiwr phil robson ' 93 returned home to south bethlehem from work one summer day after his graduation and noticed the back door to his apartment was open and his roommate's car was no where in sight he became nervous as he walked into his living room his eyes surveyed the room coffee table books couch chinese girl chinese girl he looked again sit ting on his couch was a young chinese girl watching a heathcliff cartoon on tv he approached the girl and asked who she was and why she was sitting on his couch but the girl only spoke chinese puzzled he walked up the stairs of his apart ment to the second floor in one of the four bedrooms a man and a woman both chinese were mov ing furniture his furniture around the couple spoke broken english which made it hard for robson to piece together the story apparently the family had rented robson'sandhisroommate'sapart ment this would be fine if robson and his roommate were planning to move out unfortunately he and his roommate had just rented the apartment two weeks ago under a three-month lease robson noticed another immedi ate problem the chinese family brought a cat with them an animal to which robson is extremely allergic miscommunication between robson s landlord who rented him the apartment and the landlord's property manager who rented the chinese family the apartment re sulted in this new extended family for three weeks robson his roommate the chinese family and the cat lived together can you imagine walking into your house and there's a girl on your couch robson said our lifestyle is different from that of a young family it just wasn't what we were looking for and the cat thing - that was bad when robson firstconfronted his landlord about the problem she said she only rented rooms to robson and his roommate not the whole apart ment robson knew she was wrong and pursued the situation legally to prove it we sought some legal counsel robson said and it was a misun derstanding on her part we were in the right which was one of the incentives for her to get it all cleared up and she understood that the chinese family left taking their cat with them and the land lord even gave robson and his roommate a break on the rent for the time the family was living with them situations between landlords and student tenants rarely are as extreme as robson s but students do encounter problems with land lords feeling forced off campus due to the lack of space or inad equate facilities students turn to south side bethlehem for a home students have little knowledge about renting apartments or houses which leaves them vulnerable to problems stemming from both simple miscommunication and de liberately unscrupulous landlords living off campus gives stu dents increased freedom and pri vacy yet without help from the university and without an under charitable fiji brothers serve spaghetti dinner by michelle de mooy assistant news editor dressed in white aprons stained with rich tomato sauce yellow butter and smelling of garlic the brothers of phi gamma delta fraternity served their third-annual luigi fiji spaghetti dinner for charity saturday to ap proximately 180 people the dinner was held three times throughout the night costing 5 per person and included pasta salad garlic bread dessert and juice or soda strolling musicians added to the am biance at the last dinner luigi fiji chairman zach morris 95 said 40 brothers worked hard to prepare and entertain guests the brothers made all of the food and are completely responsible for waiting morris said morris also said the dinner has been a good connection between the community and greek organizations we received many generous do nations from the surrounding area local businesses and greek organi zations and we couldn't have done anything without their help morris said all proceeds from the dinner wh ich are esti mated at al most $ 1 000 will benefit the children's home of easton a facility housing 130 mod ern-day orphaned children or kids pennanently abandoned by parents involved with alcohol drugs or other contemporary social issues michael h danjczek 59 please see stenger page 10 please see fiji page 10 please see signing page 4 rzmm^mmwlwkmmmmmmmmmm news i'lo1 ' 10 wj*r jl mm smoking policy 3 k'jl , piiiflktf''^^j master's by satellite 7 k ll ml animal testing mmr ' t bl l ice hockey 18 women's rugby 19 football lehigh prevails over holy cross 29-13 see sports page 20
