held tuesday evening in pack ard auditorium the symposium on scientific and social aspects of atomic en ergy was sponsored by the local chapter of sigma xi national sci entific honorary society dr george d harmon first of the five speakers stated that the atomic bomb has become a major factor in diplomacy and in inter national politics russia wants her share of atomic energy just as she wants her share of the world's oil supply bacteriologist speaks dr thomas grainger assistant professor of bacteriology told of the difficulties involved in the ap plication of products of atomic en ergy to diseased peoples he said that there is a need for basic re search and closer cooperation among all the sciences with ref erence to the applications of ato mic energy in medicine and bi ology the audience of more than 100 members of the faculty and stu dent body heard dr thomas h hazelhurst professor of chemistry speak on the chemist and the age of atomic energy he said that atomic energy has multiplied the nuclear tools already available to the chemist the application of atomic ener gy for commercial purposes may be realized in the future but for the present these plans are in the drawing board stage dr wilbur spatz assistant professor of phys ics told the audience during his discussion of the physicist's viewpoint on atomic energy problems discussed the raw materials of atomic energy engineers in their discovery of workable deposits of radioac tive minerals such deposits he said are very scarce and it is the function of the geologist to search for new ones a brief question and the evening of feb 25 the senior class held its third class meeting with approximately 150 seniors in attendance an insur ance policy was suggested by dick bodine which would cost the sen iors one dollar each and at the end of twenty years would have an accrued value of perhaps 90,000 if a large percentage took part in the venture this money could be used at that time to present a very worthy gift to the school a majority seemed to favor this procedure and hopes were expressed by gene sowers that this senior class could better the 36 per cent par ticipation of the preceding group dissent on class rings upon the question of class rings there was much dissention for the first time a competitor has ap peared on the campus thus forc ing the prices offered to the class down many questions were left unanswered and no action could be taken in the next issue of the brown and white final facts will be announced bearing upon the ring invitation and announce ment controversies graduation june 14 will be held either in grace hall or on the lawn facing the flag pole on saturday june 12 a combination of class day and reunion day will result in the parade of the alumni led by the seniors in their caps and gowns plans for a final beer par ty are being formed by a commit tee headed by ed artim and see mon pines placement bureau warns seniors the senior class received a warning from the placement bu reau that many of the seniors had not acted with proper courtesy toward industrial representatives they were reminded that their lack of regard not only decreased their chances of employment but also the chances for those that fol low them ifc to assume all cost of broadcast program to begin at 4 p.m continuing until 5 30 p.m on am heck announcer by mario r d antonio tomorow's wrestling matches at navy will be broadcast to lehigh men through the courtesy of the interfraternity council this meet is slated to be one of the outstand ing athletic events of the year for lehigh as neither navy nor le high has been defeated during this season billy sheridan says the matches will be no pushover how ever with a characteristic smile he stated that he is confident of lehigh's ability navy undefeated for six years the navy team has been unde feeated in dual type meets in the last six years during this period they have not met lehigh matmen the main reason the two rivals did not come together was that le high dwindled down to a very small enrollment while navy kept its normal pace during the war years this then is no criteria for judging the recent records of the teams but for whichever side it is seen the meet will be worth while listening to and may well become a classic of the 48 sports broadcast approved at special meeting of ifc ifc president samuel f sny der jr 48 called a special meet ing of the council on monday eve ning and disclosed the plan for the broadcast he stated that the en tire program would cost approxi mately 200 and would last for the entire matches the council approved taking the money from its treasury the idea behind the program is that it will be a direct service to lehigh students as the meet will be such an outstanding one and of much interest to lehigh men in general this is the first time in the his tory of the school that such a pro gram has been put on by a group of lehigh men other programs have been sponsored by various lehigh organizations but none have assumed so great a cost and for the same type purpose usual ly wgpa sponsors the meets at lehigh on their regular program schedule but this meet at navy is out of their territory and will in volve the additional expense of having a telephone wire set up from maryland to bethlehem program starts at 4:00 p.m the entire program will be an nounced by ted heck 47 and judd smull 34 several students are writing between matches scripts under the direction of tim dennis 49 the broadcast will start at 4:00 pjn over wgpa though the ac tual event will begin at 4:15 p.m there will be only varsity matches as the freshmen are wrestling at home transmission will be over both am and fm the am will go off at 5:30 p.m but if the matches are still going on the arcadia meeting wednes day feb 25 in drown hall the committee decided that in the future two evaluation sheets would be presented to the students on which to record their criti cisms one sheet will be sent to the instructor concerned and the other to the department head the new sheets will contain per tinent questions with ample space for comments the critics will be required to explain all bergerac a produc tion enjoyed by an audience of 250 for its acting scenery and costum ing the production will be given again tonight at 8:30 p.m at broughal junior high school from the instant the curtain rises on the medieval set with the clash of swordplay and the dash ing entrance of cyrano played by james scanlon the entire play comes alive and the gorgeous cos tumes the scenery and the per formance of the cast holds the the harvard university law school announces that a law school admission test will be required of all candidates for admission for the term beginning september 1948 the contenders for the heroine's part that of rox ane nancy lynn wife of a le high student played the part last night and dorothy snowden also a lehigh dame will enact the role of roxane tonight other feminine roles were taken by jeanne buss nancy bathbun mildred humenick anne nere betsy jones barbara collins and audrey kirchman who made a special hit with her part r ford pray 111 as christian had the good looks to suit his role and also a fine flair for acting in his many scenes with cyrano and roxane john w jordan in his interpretation of de guiche also turned in a fine performance as did richard a ash as rague neau guy o heck as le bret lester a coldren jay h good hart george callas and jesse monsell cyrano de bergerac will be presented again tonight at broug hal high school placement bu reau that many of the seniors had not acted with proper courtesy toward industrial representatives they were reminded that their lack of regard not only decreased their chances of employment but also the chances for those that fol low them ifc to assume all cost of broadcast program to begin at 4 p.m continuing until 5 30 p.m on am heck announcer by mario r d antonio tomorow's wrestling matches at navy will be broadcast to lehigh men through the courtesy of the interfraternity council this meet is slated to be one of the outstand ing athletic events of the year for lehigh as neither navy nor le high has been defeated during this season billy sheridan says the matches will be no pushover how ever with a characteristic smile he stated that he is confident of lehigh's ability navy undefeated for six years the navy team has been unde feeated in dual type meets in the last six years during this period they have not met lehigh matmen the main reason the two rivals did not come together was that le high dwindled down to a very small enrollment while navy kept its normal pace during the war years this then is no criteria for judging the recent records of the teams but for whichever side it is seen the meet will be worth while listening to and may well become a classic of the 48 sports broadcast approved at special meeting of ifc ifc president samuel f sny der jr 48 called a special meet ing of the council on monday eve ning and disclosed the plan for the broadcast he stated that the en tire program would cost approxi mately 200 and would last for the entire matches the council approved taking the money from its treasury the idea behind the program is that it will be a direct service to lehigh students as the meet will be such an outstanding one and of much interest to lehigh men in general this is the first time in the his tory of the school that such a pro gram has been put on by a group of lehigh men other programs have been sponsored by various lehigh organizations but none have assumed so great a cost and for the same type purpose usual ly wgpa sponsors the meets at lehigh on their regular program schedule but this meet at navy is out of their territory and will in volve the additional expense of having a telephone wire set up from maryland to bethlehem program starts at 4:00 p.m the entire program will be an nounced by ted heck 47 and judd smull 34 several students are writing between matches scripts under the direction of tim dennis 49 the broadcast will start at 4:00 pjn over wgpa though the ac tual event will begin at 4:15 p.m there will be only varsity matches as the freshmen are wrestling at home transmission will be over both am and fm the am will go off at 5:30 p.m but if the matches are still going on the fm will continue to carry them wgpa extends an invitation to all men to come over to the studio on burkhead avenue to listen to the event on fm for those persons who do not possess fm receivers the leonard busch appraisal plan up for revision arcadia decides to give two evaluation sheets revisions to the faculty evalu ation plan were submitted by the student activities committee at the regular arcadia meeting wednes day feb 25 in drown hall the committee decided that in the future two evaluation sheets would be presented to the students on which to record their criti cisms one sheet will be sent to the instructor concerned and the other to the department head the new sheets will contain per tinent questions with ample space for comments the critics will be required to explain all critical re marks change necessary the procedure is necessary said charlie boig president of arcadia to inform the instruc tors of the conditions most unde sirable to the students only in this way can the instructor be inform ed of prevailing conditions and in stitute measures to correct them the time of conducting the poll was also changed hereafter all evaluation polls will be held dur ing the the class committee reported that the sophomore class is considering es tablishing a list of duties and re sponsibilities for all class offices mr christianson said the roster of responsibilities for bergerac a produc tion enjoyed by an audience of 250 for its acting scenery and costum ing the production will be given again tonight at 8:30 p.m at broughal junior high school from the instant the curtain rises on the medieval set with the clash of swordplay and the dash ing entrance of cyrano played by james scanlon the entire play comes alive and the gorgeous cos tumes the scenery and the per formance of the cast holds the the harvard university law school announces that a law school admission test will be required of all candidates for admission for the term beginning september 1948 the next examination will be held on may 8 1948 seniors interested in taking this test should send to the educa tional testing service p o box 592 princeton n j for applicatiqn blanks completed test student element enjoyed the sword duels especially the bril liant play and counterplay be tween cyrano and valvert who was portrayed by james g pal mer more than anything else the stage crew and cast alike were working under the added difficulties of producing a play of such heroic proportions as cy rano on broughal high school's small stage and with the limited amount of equipment mustard and cheese had at its disposal james scanlon was lauded by several students for his presenta tion of the character of cyrano which at times became almost professional lehiffh dames star there are two contenders for the heroine's part that of rox ane nancy lynn wife of a le high student played the part last night and dorothy snowden also a lehigh dame will enact the role of roxane tonight other feminine roles were taken by jeanne buss nancy bathbun mildred humenick anne nere betsy jones barbara collins and audrey kirchman who made a special hit with her part r ford pray 111 as christian had the good looks to suit his role and also a fine flair for acting in his many scenes with cyrano and roxane john w jordan in his interpretation of de guiche also turned in a fine performance as did richard a ash as rague neau guy o heck as le bret lester a coldren jay h good hart george callas and jesse monsell cyrano de bergerac will be presented again tonight at broug hal high school auditorium mus tard and cheese for their annual spring production will stage gil bert & sullivan's famous mi kado at the same place on april 29 30 and may 1 fete starts l u drive for funds 250 volunteer workers dine at local hotel 1,500,000 goal set with a national goal of 1,500 000 the lehigh progress fund was launched in a kickoff dinner at the hotel bethlehem on feb 25 over 250 volunteer workers at tended the banquet which was de signed to open lehigh's first drive for financial support in over 25 years president whitaker was the principal speaker extra copies of brown and white
