brown and white lehigh university's student newspaper founded in 1894 vol 102 no 15 friday november 4 1994 ah the lehigh news first rathbone workers fight uphill battle over parking by paul hare managing editor esther mason sits in her 89 oldsmobile in the rauch business center parking lot each morning wait ing to go to work for 20 years mason has been an employee at rathbone dining hall in all that time getting to work has never been so difficult she arrives a half hour early for her 1 1 30 a.m shift and waits for her son darren to arrive and drive her from her car in the rauch parking lot to rathbone being driven from rauch to rathbone may sound strange but mason is 61 years old suffers from bronchial asthma and cannot make the steep climb after dropping mason off darren also a rathbone employee again drives to rauch to park his car and returns to rathbone to start his shift if it weren't for my son i'd be forced to quit my job mason said there are a lot of people who work here who just sit in their cars and wait for someone else to give them a ride mason is just one of the wood food services employees who are forced to make the climb to work each day in her service at rathbone this is the first time mason has ever had to worry about getting to work for 1 8 years i parked right out in front mason said 4 then all of a sudden they come along and start ticketing our cars mason s dilemma is faced by sev eral rathbone employees who are either too old or too weak to walk from rauch to rathbone their di lemma is a result of a parking policy created in early october which states only faculty and staff are allowed to park in front of rathbone according to patricia kovacs manager of parking services wood is a private contractor who provides food service for the university kovacs said since contracted labor is notconsidered lehigh faculty or staff the wood employees are ineligible to park outside rathbone to my knowledge before i came to this position there was a change which said wood staff would park at brodhead and packer lots kovacs said in the beginning of this year i received phone calls complaining about overcrowding in front of rathbone i spoke with tom lam bert administrative supervisor of food services and said wood em ployees should be parking some where else he wrote a memo to the employees explaining he would like them to park at brodhead or rauch employees however said this policy is new to them according to jane siegfried day-shift supervisor the rathbone staff was not given any memorandum about the policy siegfried said not only was she not warned but had been led to believe the opposite when i first started working here they gave me a sheet telling where i can park it said i could park out front siegfried said they said it was the only place i could park raw photo hy kkistif vasiiaw chad henry 97 and jean boswell 98 receive their new mailbox assignments for the ulrich student center minority recruiting wars by garth poorman associate editor special feature story lehigh steps up efforts to attract minorities in a competitive market as a senior at science high school in newark n.j shakira johnson 97 was in demand a bright and ambitious african-american woman johnson typified the kind of candidate college admis sion counselor's across the country look for the offers came in one after the other but instead of accepting full scholarships to georgia tech morgan state or the university of pittsburgh johnson chose to attend i ehigh - even though she woul d be forced to pick up part of the tab for her education i would have gone to one of the colleges where i wouldn't have had to pay anything johnson said but my mom told me not to worry about the money part and that the family would chip in so that i could go where i wanted pilar rivera 97 a puerto rican student from the bronx n.y went through the same predicament during her college search rivera decided that le high had the kind of support systems for minority students she was looking for but syracuse university where she had also been admitted gave rivera a finan cial aid package considerably more lucrative than any lehigh could offer rivera still chose lehigh statistics illustrate that lehigh is attracting more minority students each year over twelve percent of this year's freshmen are either african american hispanic or asian american - a 233 percent increase from 1984 yet the numbers for the university as a whole are still disheartening according to the registrar less than three out of every 100 lehigh students are black and even fewer are hispanic the process of attracting minorities is a challenging one because lehigh is still trying to build a reputation in minority communities and does not get into bidding shakira johnson 97 left and pilar rivera 97 both gave up lucrative scholarship offers to attend lehigh post office boxes moved to ulrich by george stathopulos news writer the post office and individual student mailboxes will be transferred from the university center to the new ulrich student center in grace hall and will reopen on monday morning the uc post office has been in operation for 35 years so when the opportunity arose for improved postal facilities wayne hoffman director of mailing services jumped at the chance the decision to move was made for us because the university center needed the space with the lehigh cafe being renovated into a food court hoffman said there was no other room in the uc so the new student center was available and this was our only chance for the improve ment of our facilities along with the new post office there will be 4,377 mailboxes in the new studentcenter scattered through out ulrich in seven different areas lettered a through g also 1 2 stu dent groups will be chosen to receive organizational boxes 4,3 1 4 students require boxes if there ever more students than available mailboxes a temporary z box will be used for the remaining students who do not have boxes the z box exists in name only until further arrangements can be made when classes begin in august some incoming students who were initially assigned boxes will choose not to attend lehigh their desig nated boxes will then be assigned to students that had originally been as please see parking page 9 please see post page 9 please see recruiting page 4 news 1-10 h world news briefs 2 trees outside richards 3 laundry problems 6 lifestyle 11-18 big brother/big sister 12 body piercing 15 sports 22-24 football preview 22 wrestling 23 women's soccer lehigh beats fairfield 4-1 see sports page 24
